The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was cupped while he was in the state of ihram, due to a sprain in his hip or his back.
أن رسول الله ﷺ احتجم وهو محرم من وثي كان بوركه أو ظهره.
Ahmad narrated it (14280, 14857) through multiple routes from Hisham, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related it. Abu Dawud (3863) also narrated it through this same route, and Ibn Khuzayma (2660) graded it sahih, except that Abu Dawud did not mention his statement, "while he was in the state of ihram." Ibn Majah (3082) narrated it through another route from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu Zubayr, with his chain of transmission, and it contains, "that the Prophet ﷺ had himself cupped while in the state of ihram because of a hurt that had befallen him," meaning a sprain. Its chain is hasan because of Abu Zubayr. His statement, "wathy," and it is also said "wath" with a fatha on the waw, a sakinah on the tha, and ending with a hamza, meaning pain affecting the flesh without reaching the bone. The jurisprudence of this chapter is that none of the scholars considered it objectionable for a person in the state of ihram to have himself cupped if he does so from a spot with no hair on it. If he has himself cupped on a hairy spot and cuts the hair, then he may do so, but he must make atonement. This is the view of the majority of the scholars, among them Abu Hanifa, Shafii, Ahmad, Ishaq, and others. Malik said that a person in the state of ihram should not have himself cupped unless there is an unavoidable necessity for it.
