Aqra bin Habis asked the Prophet ﷺ, "Messenger of Allah, is the pilgrimage required every year or only once?"He replied, "Only once. Whoever performs more does so voluntarily."
إن الأقرع بن حابس سأل النبي ﷺ، فقال: يا رسول الله، الحج في كل سنة أو مرة واحدة؟ قال: بل مرة واحدة، فمن زاد فهو تطوع.
Reported by Abu Dawud (1721), Ibn Majah (2886), and Imam Ahmad (3303), all of them through the route of Yazid bin Harun, from Sufyan bin Husayn, from Zuhri, from Abu Sinan, from Ibn Abbas, who related it. Hakim graded it sahih (1/441) and said, "This chain is sahih, and this Abu Sinan is al-Duali. The two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not report it because they did not report from Sufyan bin Husayn, who is among the trustworthy narrators whose hadiths are collected."I say, it is as he said. Sufyan bin Husayn, although trustworthy, has been criticized specifically regarding his narration from Zuhri. However, he was corroborated by a number of narrators, some of whom Abu Dawud mentioned following the hadith, saying, "Abu Sinan al-Duali, this is how Abdul-Jalil bin Humayd and Sulayman bin Kathir both said it, from Zuhri, while Aqeel said, Sinan." End of quote.As for the route of Abdul-Jalil bin Humayd, from Ibn Shihab, Nasai (2620) reported it with his chain from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah stood up and said, "Allah has prescribed Hajj upon you." Aqra bin Habis al-Tamimi stood up and asked, "Every year, O Messenger of Allah?" He remained silent, then said, "If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory, and then you would not have been able to hear or bear it. Rather, it is a single Hajj."As for the narration of Sulayman bin Kathir, it was reported by Imam Ahmad (2304), Darimi (1788), and Bayhaqi (4/326), who said, I heard Ibn Shihab narrating from Abu Sinan, from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said, "O people, Hajj has been prescribed upon you." He said, Aqra bin Habis stood up and asked, "Every year, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "If I had said it, it would have become obligatory, and if it had become obligatory, you would not have been able to act upon it, or you would not have been able to bear acting upon it. Hajj is once, and whoever does more than that, it is voluntary."Among those who also corroborated him was Muhammad bin Abu Hafsa, who said, Ibn Shihab narrated to us with his chain from Ibn Abbas, that Aqra bin Habis asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Is Hajj every year?" He said, "No, rather it is once, and whoever performs Hajj after that, it is voluntary. And if I had said yes, it would have become obligatory, and you would not have been able to hear it or obey it."This was reported by Imam Ahmad (3510) from Rawh, who said, Muhammad bin Abu Hafsa narrated to us with his chain. It has other corroborating narrations as well.
