My father and I were with Marwan bin Hakam, who was the governor of Medina, when it was mentioned to him that Abu Hurairah was saying, "Whoever rises in the morning in a state of major ritual impurity must break his fast that day."Marwan said, "I urge you, Abd al-Rahman, to go to the Mothers of the Believers, Ayesha and Umm Salama, and ask them about this."So Abd al-Rahman went and I went with him until we entered upon Ayesha. He greeted her and then said, "Mother of the Believers, we were with Marwan bin Hakam, and it was mentioned to him that Abu Hurairah says, 'Whoever rises in the morning in a state of major ritual impurity must break his fast that day.'"Ayesha replied, "It is not as Abu Hurairah said, Abd al-Rahman. Do you turn away from what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do?"Abd al-Rahman said, "No, by Allah."Ayesha said, "I bear witness regarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he used to rise in the morning in a state of major ritual impurity from intercourse, not from a wet dream, and he would still fast that day."Then we left and went in to Umm Salama, and he asked her about it, and she said the same as Ayesha had said.We left and came to Marwan bin Hakam, and Abd al-Rahman told him what the two had said.Marwan said, "I urge you, Abu Muhammad, to ride my mount, which is at the door, and go to Abu Hurairah, for he is at his land in al-Aqiq, and inform him of this."So Abd al-Rahman rode and I rode with him until we came to Abu Hurairah. Abd al-Rahman spoke with him for a while and then mentioned the matter to him.Abu Hurairah said to him, "I have no firsthand knowledge of that. Someone simply informed me of it."
Malik related it in the Book of Fasting (11) from Sumayy, the freed slave of Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham, that he heard Abu Bakr narrate it, and he mentioned it. Bukhari related it in the Book of Fasting (1926, 1925) from Abdullah bin Maslama, from Malik, with the same wording. And by the route of Zuhri, who said, Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham informed me that his father Abdul-Rahman informed Marwan that Ayesha and Umm Salama informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sometimes have Fajr come upon him while he was in a state of major impurity from relations with his wife, and he would then perform ghusl and fast. And Marwan said to Abdul-Rahman bin Harith, "I swear by Allah, you must confront Abu Hurairah with this..." the hadith continues in similar fashion.Bukhari also related it in another place in his book (1931) from Ismail (who is Ibn Abu Uways), from Malik, with the same wording, in abridged form.Malik related it (10), and by his route Muslim related it in the Book of Fasting (1109:78), from Abd Rabbih bin Saeed, from Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham, from Ayesha and Umm Salama, and they mentioned the wording of the marfu hadith without the accompanying story. The story mentioned was related by Muslim (1109:75) by the route of Ibn Jurayj, who said, Abdul-Malik bin Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman informed me, from Abu Bakr, who said, I heard Abu Hurairah narrating and saying in his narration, "Whoever is overtaken by Fajr in a state of major impurity should not fast..." the hadith continues, and it contains the story. At its end it says, Abu Hurairah said, "Did the two of them tell you this?" He said, "Yes." He said, "They know better."Then Abu Hurairah traced back what he had been saying on this matter to Fadl bin Abbas, and Abu Hurairah said, "I heard that from Fadl, and I did not hear it from the Prophet ﷺ." He said, so Abu Hurairah retracted what he had been saying on that matter.I said to Abdul-Malik, "Did the two of them say 'in Ramadan'?" He said, "Just so, he would wake up in a state of major impurity without having had a wet dream, and then he would fast."
