I was sitting with Abu Hurairah when a man came to him and asked, "Did you forbid people from fasting on Friday?"Abu Hurairah replied, "I did not forbid people from fasting on Friday, but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Do not fast on Friday, for it is a day of celebration, unless you join it with other days.'"

Ahmad (8773), Ibn Hibban (3610), and Abdul-Razzaq (7806) all narrated it through various routes from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from a man from Banu Harith bin Kaab called Abu Awbar, who related it. The wording given here is Ibn Hibban's. Its chain is hasan because of Abu Awbar, whose biography appears in Tajil under the entry for Ziyad Harithi, as Nasai, Dulabi, Abu Ahmad, and others named him. Ibn Main and Ibn Hibban both deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban graded his hadith sahih. Husayni asserted that he is known, though he is better known by his kunya than by his given name.On this subject there is also what was narrated from Abu Hurairah, as a marfu report, "Friday is a day of celebration, so do not make your day of celebration also your day of fasting, unless you fast the day before or the day after it." This was narrated by Imam Ahmad (8025), Ibn Khuzayma (2161, 2166), Hakim (1/437), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (1069), all through the route of Abu Bishr, from Amir bin Ludayn Ashari, from Abu Hurairah, who related it. Abu Bishr's name is not known and he is unidentified, as Dhahabi noted in response to Hakim's statement that its chain was sahih, saying, "except that I have not been able to determine the name of this Abu Bishr, and he is neither Bayan bin Bishr nor Jafar bin Abu Wahshiya." As for Amir bin Ludayn, no one but Ibn Hibban deemed him trustworthy, so he too is counted among the unidentified narrators.
