Some people asked, "Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?"He replied, "Do you have any difficulty seeing the sun when there is no cloud beneath it?"They said, "No, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "Do you have any difficulty seeing the moon on the night of the full moon when there is no cloud beneath it?"They said, "No, Messenger of Allah."He said, "You will see Him on the Day of Resurrection just as you see these. Allah will gather the people and say, 'Whoever used to worship something, let him follow it.' So those who worshipped the sun will follow it, those who worshipped the moon will follow it, and those who worshipped false deities will follow them. This nation will remain, with its hypocrites among it, and Allah will come to them in a form other than the one they recognize and say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'We seek refuge in Allah from you. This is our place until our Lord comes to us. When our Lord comes, we will recognize Him.' Then Allah will come to them in the form they recognize and say, 'I am your Lord,' and they will say, 'You are our Lord,' and they will follow Him.The bridge over Hellfire will be set in place."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I will be the first to cross it. The supplication of the messengers on that day will be, 'O Allah, grant safety, grant safety.' On the bridge are hooks like the thorns of the saadan plant. Have you not seen the thorns of the saadan?"They said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "They are like the thorns of the saadan, except that none knows their immense size but Allah. They snatch people according to their deeds. Some are destroyed by their deeds, and some are torn to shreds before being saved. When Allah has finished judging between His servants and wishes to bring out from the Fire whomever He wills among those who used to bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He will command the angels to bring them out. The angels will recognize them by the marks of prostration, for Allah has forbidden the Fire to consume the marks of prostration on the son of Adam. They will be brought out, scorched black, and water called the Water of Life will be poured over them, and they will sprout as a seed sprouts in the silt left by a flood. One man among them will remain with his face turned toward the Fire and will say, 'My Lord, its stench has overcome me and its blaze has burned me. Turn my face away from the Fire.' He will keep calling upon Allah, and Allah will say, 'Perhaps if I grant you this, you will ask Me for something else.' He will say, 'No, by Your might, I will not ask You for anything else.' So his face will be turned away from the Fire. Then later he will say, 'My Lord, bring me near to the gate of Paradise.' Allah will say, 'Did you not claim that you would not ask Me for anything else? Woe to you, son of Adam, how treacherous you are!' But he will keep pleading, and Allah will say, 'Perhaps if I grant you this, you will ask Me for something else.' He will say, 'No, by Your might, I will not ask You for anything else,' and he will give Allah every covenant and pledge that he will not ask for anything else. So Allah will bring him near to the gate of Paradise. When he sees what is within it, he will be silent for as long as Allah wills him to be silent, then he will say, 'My Lord, admit me into Paradise.' Allah will say, 'Did you not claim that you would not ask Me for anything else? Woe to you, son of Adam, how treacherous you are!' He will say, 'My Lord, do not make me the most wretched of Your creation.' He will keep pleading until Allah laughs at him, and when Allah laughs at him, He will permit him to enter it.When he enters it, he will be told, 'Wish for such and such,' and he will make wishes. Then he will be told, 'Wish for such and such,' and he will make wishes until his wishes are exhausted. Then he will be told, 'This is yours, and the like of it with it.'"Abu Hurairah said, "That man will be the last of the people of Paradise to enter it."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Raqaiq (6573), and Muslim related it in the Book of Iman (300:182), both from the hadith of Abu Yaman, who said, Shuayb informed us, from Zuhri, who said, Saeed bin Musayab and Ata bin Yazid Laythi informed me, that Abu Hurairah said, and he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Bukhari, while Muslim did not give the wording of Shuayb, but rather referred to the hadith of Ibrahim bin Saad, from Zuhri, and the wordings of Shuayb and Ibrahim are close to one another. His saying, "This nation will remain, along with its hypocrites in it," means that the hypocrites remain among the believers just as they were in this world, concealing themselves among them. His saying, "Allah will come to them in a form other than the form they know," means in the form of a created being, while they already know from His saying,"There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing" [Shura 42:11]that He is exalted above the attributes of this form. His saying, "Allah will come to them in the form they know," so the believers will say, "You are our Lord," and they will follow Him. As for the hypocrites, the bridge will be laid across the middle of Hell, and the hypocrites will remain behind the bridge, not seeing Allah, exalted is He, because the light of the believers has been withheld from them. His saying, "So I and my nation will be the first to cross," means without the hypocrites, because they will have fallen into the very bottom of Hell, as Allah, exalted is He, said,"Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire" [Nisa 4:145]and by this the hypocrites are forbidden from seeing Allah, exalted is He, forever, as is the position of the people of the sunnah and the community.
