The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about fasting on Mondays. He replied, "On that day I was born, and on that day revelation was sent down to me."
أن رسول الله ﷺ سئل عن صوم الاثنين؟ فقال: فيه ولدت، وفيه أنزل على.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Fasting (1162/198) through the route of Mahdi bin Maymun, from Ghaylan (that is, Ibn Jareer Muawali), from Abdullah bin Mabad Zimmani, from Abu Qatada, and he mentioned it. He also narrated it (1162/197) through the route of Shuba, from Ghaylan bin Jareer, with similar wording. Then Muslim said, "In this hadith, from the narration of Shuba, he said, He was asked about fasting on Monday and Thursday, so we remained silent about mentioning Thursday because we thought it was a mistake."That is, as thanks to Allah for what He bestowed upon the ummah in the birth of the Prophet ﷺ, his being sent as a messenger, and the descent of revelation in it. In this hadith there is a great pointer that the celebration of the Prophet's ﷺ birth should take the form of fasting on Monday every week throughout the year, including the month of Rabi Awwal as well.Whoever adds beyond this fasting has introduced into his ﷺ religion something he did not command, and it is rejected against its doer, as is established in Sahihayn, Bukhari (2697) and Muslim (1718).As for his statement, "because we thought it was a mistake," this is because Shuba was doubtful and would refrain from narrating the hadith merely due to doubt, but others narrated it without doubt.
