One morning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delayed from us for the dawn prayer until we could almost see the disc of the sun appearing. He came out hurriedly, the call to begin the prayer was given, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the prayer, keeping it brief. When he gave the salam, he called out to us in a raised voice, "Stay in your rows as you are."Then he turned toward us and said, "I am going to tell you what kept me from you this morning. I rose during the night, performed ablution, and prayed what was decreed for me. Then I grew drowsy in my prayer until sleep overcame me, and suddenly I was before my Lord in the most beautiful form.He said, 'Muhammad.'I said, 'At Your service, my Lord.'He asked, 'What are the highest assembly disputing about?'I said, 'I do not know.' He repeated this three times. Then I saw Him place His palm between my shoulders until I felt the coolness of His fingertips between my chest, and everything became clear to me, and I knew.He said, 'Muhammad.'I said, 'At Your service, my Lord.'He asked, 'What are the highest assembly disputing about?'I said, 'About the expiations.'He asked, 'What are they?'I said, 'Walking on foot to congregational prayers, sitting in the mosques after the prayers, and completing ablution thoroughly in disagreeable conditions.'He asked, 'And what else?'I said, 'Feeding others, speaking gently, and praying at night while people sleep.'He said, 'Ask.'I said, 'O Allah, I ask You for the doing of good deeds, the abandonment of evil deeds, and love of the poor. Forgive me and have mercy on me. When You intend to test a people with trial, take me to You without being subjected to that trial. I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of every deed that brings me near to Your love.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is true, so study it and learn it."
Tirmidhi (3235) narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Muaz bin Hani told us, Abu Hani Yashkuri told us, Jahdam bin Abdullah told us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Zayd bin Salam, from Abu Salam, from Abdul-Rahman bin Aaish Hadrami, that he related to him from Malik bin Yakhamir Saksaki, from Muaz bin Jabal, and he related it.Ibn Khuzayma also narrated it in his book Tawhid (441), as did Ahmad (22109) and Ibn Adi (2344/6), all of them through the route of Yahya bin Abu Kathir with a similar wording, though Ibn Adi abridged it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith. I asked Muhammad bin Ismail about the hadith, and he said, This is a hasan sahih hadith. He also said, This is more sahih than the hadith of Walid bin Muslim, from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, who said, Khalid bin Lajlaj told us, Abdul-Rahman bin Aaish Hadrami told me, saying, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," and he related the hadith, "but this is not preserved. This is how Walid mentioned it in his hadith, from Abdul-Rahman bin Aaish, who said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. But Bishr bin Bakr narrated this same hadith with this chain from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, from Abdul-Rahman bin Aaish, from the Prophet ﷺ, and this is more sahih, for Abdul-Rahman bin Aaish did not hear directly from the Prophet ﷺ." End of quote.Hakim also recorded it (1/520–521) through another route, from Muhammad bin Shuayb bin Shabur, from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, similar to the hadith of Bishr bin Bakr, as Tirmidhi indicated. Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in its chain, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it." Then Hakim said, "It has also been narrated from Muaz bin Jabal, from the Prophet ﷺ, with similar wording."It would have been more fitting to cite the hadith of Yahya bin Abu Kathir, since scholars, including Bukhari and Ahmad, judged it sahih, as will follow. As for Abdul-Rahman bin Aaish, he did not hear from the Prophet ﷺ except concerning "Allah," as Tirmidhi stated, and Abu Hatim said, "He is a follower of the companions (tabii)."Ibn Adi said, "This has several routes, concerning his saying, I saw my Lord in the finest form, and they differed regarding its chains of transmission. I found that Ahmad bin Hanbal judged sahih the narration transmitted by Musa bin Khalaf, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, containing the hadith of Muaz bin Jabal, saying, This is the soundest of them."Hafiz said in his Tahdhib (6/205), "Likewise, Ibn Khuzayma strengthened it through the narration of Yahya, from Zayd, from his grandfather, from him, from Malik bin Yakhamir, from Muaz bin Jabal."As for the hadith of Walid bin Muslim, from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, who said, Khalid bin Lajlaj told us, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Aaish told me, who said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he related the hadith, it was narrated by Darimi in his Sunan (2195), by Ibn Abu Asim in Sunnah (467), and by Ibn Jawzi in Ilal Mutanahiya (1/31), all of them through the route of Walid bin Muslim with his chain, and it is disconnected (munqati).
