Nasai (2220) narrated it from Amr bin Ali, from Abdul-Rahman, who said, Mahdi bin Maymun told us, who said, Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abu Yaqub informed me, who said, Raja bin Haywa informed me, from Abu Umama, who said (he mentioned it).Imam Ahmad (22141, 22142, 22195, 22220) also narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (3425) graded it sahih, both of them through the route of Mahdi bin Maymun, in a longer version than this. Imam Ahmad (22140) likewise narrated it through the route of Wasil, the freedman of Abu Uyayna, from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abu Yaqub.Shuba disagreed with both of them, narrating it from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abu Yaqub, who said, I heard Abu Nasr Hilali, from Raja bin Haywa, from Abu Umama, and in it he said, "Hold to fasting, for nothing equals it." He thus inserted Abu Nasr Hilali between Muhammad bin Abu Yaqub and Raja bin Haywa.Ibn Khuzayma (1893), Ibn Hibban (3426), and Hakim (1/421) all narrated it from the hadith of Abdul-Samad bin Abdul-Warith, from Shuba, with this chain.Ibn Hibban said, "This Abu Nasr is Humayd bin Hilal, and I do not deny that Muhammad bin Abu Yaqub may have heard this report in full from Raja bin Haywa, and heard part of it from Humayd bin Hilal. So both routes are preserved." End of quote.Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in its chain, which the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record. This Muhammad bin Abu Yaqub is the one about whom Shuba, when narrating from him, would say, 'The chief of Banu Tamim told me.' Abu Nasr Hilali is Humayd bin Hilal Adawi. I know of no one who transmitted from Shuba on his authority except Abdul-Samad, who is trustworthy and reliable."Dhahabi said, "Sahih. Abu Nasr, Humayd bin Hilal Adawi, this was transmitted solely by Abdul-Samad bin Abdul-Warith, from Shuba."I say, the matter is not as the two of them said, for Nasai (2222, 2223) narrated it through two other routes, Yaqub Hadrami and Yahya bin Abu Kathir, both of them from Shuba with this same chain. The conclusion regarding it is that the chain is sahih, and Muhammad bin Abu Yaqub explicitly stated that he heard it from Raja bin Haywa, just as he explicitly stated that he heard it from Abu Nasr Hilali. So both routes are preserved, as Ibn Hibban said.As for what appears in the Musannaf of Abdul-Razzaq (7899), from Hisham bin Hassan, from Muhammad bin Abu Yaqub, from Abu Umama, it appears that "Raja bin Haywa" was dropped from it, either by the copyists, or by one of the narrators, as the editor stated.
