We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey while he was fasting. When the sun had set, he said to one of the men, "So-and-so, get up and prepare a drink for us."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, perhaps you should wait until evening."He said, "Get down and prepare a drink for us."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, perhaps you should wait until evening."He said, "Get down and prepare a drink for us."The man said, "There is still daylight upon you."He said, "Get down and prepare a drink for us."So the man got down and prepared the drink for them, and the Prophet ﷺ drank. Then he said, "When you see that the night has come from this direction, the fasting person may break his fast."
كنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في سفر وهو صائم، فلما غابت الشمس قال لبعض القوم: يا فلان، قم فاجدح لنا، فقال: يا رسول الله لو أمسيت. قال: انزل فاجدح لنا. قال: يا رسول الله فلو أمسيت. قال: انزل فاجدح لنا. قال: إن عليك نهارا، قال: انزل فاجدح لنا. فنزل فجدح لهم فشرب النبي ﷺ ثم قال: إذا رأيتم الليل قد أقبل من هاهنا فقد أفطر الصائم.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Fasting (1955), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Fasting (1101), both through the route of Abu Ishaq Sulayman Shaybani, from Abdullah bin Abu Awfa. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar.His saying, "Stir it for us" (fajdah lana). Al-jadh means to stir sawiq with water and mix it thoroughly until it becomes smooth, and likewise with milk and similar things. Al-mijdah is a stick with a winged head used to stir drinks, and sometimes it has three prongs. Nihayah (1/700).The name of the unnamed companion is Bilal, as mentioned in some of the narrations.
