The people were looking out for the crescent moon. I informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I had sighted it, so he fasted and ordered the people to fast.
تراءى الناس الهلال، فأخبرت رسول الله ﷺ أني رأيته فصامه وأمر الناس بصيامه.
Abu Dawud (2342) narrated it from Mahmud bin Khalid and Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman Samarqandi, and I am more precise regarding his hadith, they both said, Marwan (that is, bin Muhammad) told us, from Abdullah bin Wahb, from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Salim, from Abu Bakr bin Nafi, from his father, from Ibn Umar, and he related it.Its isnad is sahih. Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman Samarqandi is the hafiz Darimi, the author of the Sunan, and the hadith is in his Sunan (1733). Ibn Hazm also related it through his route in Muhalla (6/236) and said, "This is a sahih report." Ibn Hibban also graded it sahih (3447).Daraqutni said (2146) that Marwan bin Muhammad alone transmitted it from Ibn Wahb, and he is trustworthy.I say, this escaped Daraqutni's notice, for Harun bin Saeed Ayli, who is trustworthy and excellent, also narrated it from Abdullah bin Wahb, with the same isnad as his. Hakim related it through his route (1/423), and from him Bayhaqi (4/212). Hakim said, sahih according to the criterion of Muslim.
