Abu Bakhtari reported,

We set out to perform Umra, and when we stopped at Batn Nakhla, we sighted the new moon. Some of the people said, "It is two nights old."Then we met Ibn Abbas and said to him, "We have sighted the new moon. Some of us say it is three nights old, while others say it is two nights old."He asked, "On which night did you see it?"We replied, "On such and such a night."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Allah has extended it for sighting, so it belongs to the night on which you saw it.'"

Sahih
