Whenever something was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would ask, "Is this charity or a gift?"If they said, "Charity," he would not eat from it, and if they said, "A gift," he would eat.
كان رسول الله ﷺ إذا أني بشيء سأل أصدقة هي أم هدية؟ فإن قالوا: صدقة لم يأكل، وإن قالوا: هدية أكل.
Tirmidhi (656) and Nasai (2614) both narrated it from the hadith of Bahz bin Hakeem, from his father, from his grandfather, and mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Bahz bin Hakeem is a hasan gharib hadith." He also said, "The grandfather of Bahz bin Hakeem was named Muawiya bin Hayda Qushayri." End of quote.From this same route, Imam Ahmad also recorded it (20054), and in it, "If they said it was a gift, he would extend his hand, but if they said it was charity, he would say to his companions, 'Take it.'"I say, its chain is hasan, as Tirmidhi said, because Bahz and his father Hakeem are both truthful narrators.
