Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia reported,

Rabia bin Harith and Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib met and said, "By Allah, if we sent these two young men," meaning me and Fadl bin Abbas, "to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to speak with him so that he might appoint them over these charity collections, they could deliver what others deliver and earn what others earn."While they were discussing this, Ali bin Abu Talib came up and stood beside them. They mentioned the matter to him.Ali bin Abu Talib said, "Do not do it. By Allah, he will not do it."Rabia bin Harith turned on him and said, "By Allah, you are only doing this out of envy toward us. By Allah, you obtained the honor of marrying into the Messenger of Allah's family ﷺ and we did not envy you for it."Ali said, "Send them, then."So we set off, and Ali lay down. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed the noon prayer, we went ahead of him to his chamber and stood there until he arrived. He took us by the ears and said, "Out with whatever you are concealing."Then he entered, and we entered with him. He was at that time with Zaynab bint Jahsh. We each tried to leave the talking to the other, then one of us spoke up and said, "Messenger of Allah, you are the most dutiful and most kind of people, and we have reached the age of marriage. We have come so that you may appoint us over some of these charity collections. We will deliver to you as others deliver and earn as others earn."He remained silent for a long time, until we wanted to speak to him again. Zaynab began signaling to us from behind the curtain not to speak to him. Then he said, "Charity is not permissible for the family of Muhammad. It is merely the impurities of the people. Call for me Mahmiyah," who was in charge of the fifth, "and Nawfal bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib."They came to him. He said to Mahmiyah, "Marry your daughter to this young man," meaning Fadl bin Abbas, and he married her to him.He said to Nawfal bin Harith, "Marry your daughter to this young man," meaning me, and he married her to me.Then he said to Mahmiyah, "Pay such-and-such as their dowry from the fifth."Zuhri said, "He did not name the amount to me."
