The Prophet ﷺ finished the dawn prayer one day and went over to the women in the mosque. He stood before them and said, "Women, I have never seen any people more deficient in intellect and religion, yet more capable of robbing sensible men of their reason, than you. I have indeed seen that you will be the majority of the inhabitants of the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, so draw near to Allah by whatever means you can."Among the women was the wife of Abdullah bin Masud. She went to Abdullah bin Masud and told him what she had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and she took some jewelry of hers.Ibn Masud asked, "Where are you going with this jewelry?"She replied, "I want to draw near to Allah and His Messenger with it, hoping that Allah will not make me one of the people of the Fire."He said, "Woe to you! Come, give it as charity to me and to my children, for we are a fitting place for it."She said, "No, by Allah, not until I take it to the Prophet ﷺ."So she went to seek permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ. They said to the Prophet, "This is Zaynab seeking permission, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "Which of the Zaynabs is she?"They said, "The wife of Abdullah bin Masud."He said, "Let her in."She came in to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I heard something you said, so I went back to Ibn Masud and told him about it, and I took some jewelry to draw near to Allah and to you with it, hoping that Allah will not make me one of the people of the Fire. But Ibn Masud said to me, 'Give it as charity to me and to my children, for we are a fitting place for it.' I said, 'Not until I ask the Prophet's permission.'"The Prophet ﷺ said, "Give it to him and to his sons as charity, for they are a fitting place for it."
Imam Ahmad (8862) and Abu Yaala (6585) both narrated it from the hadith of Ismail, who said, Amr, meaning Ibn Abu Amr, informed me, from Abu Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Its chain is hasan because of Amr bin Abu Amr, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan. Ibn Khuzayma also narrated it through this route in his Sahih (2461). The basic hadith is found in Sahih Muslim (80), except that Muslim did not give the wording of the hadith, but rather referred back to the hadith of Ibn Umar, and there is no mention there of the story of Zaynab.
