The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best charity is that which is given out of surplus wealth. The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those whom you are obliged to support. A wife says, 'Either feed me or divorce me.' A slave says, 'Feed me and put me to work.' A son says, 'Feed me, to whom will you leave me?'"They asked, "Abu Hurairah, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He replied, "No, this last part is from the purse of Abu Hurairah."
قال النبي ﷺ: أفضل الصدقة ما ترك غني، واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى، وابدأ بمن تعول. تقول المرأة: إما أن تطعمني وإما أن تطلقني، ويقول العبد: أطعمني واستعملني، ويقول الابن: أطعمني، إلى من تدعني. فقالوا: يا أبا هريرة، سمعت هذا من رسول الله ﷺ؟ قال: لا هذا من كيس أبي هريرة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Expenditures (5355) from Umar bin Hafs, who said, my father narrated to us, who said, Amash narrated to us, who said, Abu Salih narrated to us, who said, Abu Hurairah narrated to me, and he mentioned it. The second part of the hadith is from the words of Abu Hurairah himself, as is clear from what he said.As for what Ibn Hibban narrated (3363), and Daraqutni (3/297), by way of Asim bin Bahdala, and Bayhaqi (7/470) by way of Zayd bin Aslam, both from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, they made the whole of it a raised report. The correct position is what Amash narrated from Abu Salih, distinguishing the raised part from the part that stops with the companion.
