Saad bin Ubada went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his expeditions, and during his absence his mother was on the verge of death in Medina. She was told, "Make a will."She replied, "What should I leave a will about? The wealth all belongs to Saad."She passed away before Saad returned. When Saad bin Ubada came back, he was informed of what had happened. He asked, "Messenger of Allah, will it benefit her if I give charity on her behalf?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered, "Yes."Saad said, "Then such-and-such a garden is given as charity on her behalf," naming a particular garden of his.
أنه خرج مع رسول الله ﷺ في بعض مغازيه فحضرت أمه الوفاة بالمدينة، فقيل لها: أوصي. فقالت: فيم أوصي إنما المال مال سعد؟ فتوفيت قبل أن يقدم سعد، فلما قدم سعد بن عبادة ذكر ذلك له، فقال سعد: يا رسول الله، هل ينفعها أن أتصدق عنها؟ فقال رسول الله ﷺ: نعم. فقال سعد: حائط كذا وكذا صدقة عنها لحائط سماه.
Malik narrated it in Aqdiya (54) from Saeed bin Amr bin Shurahbil ibn Saeed bin Saad bin Ubada, from his father, from his grandfather, that he said, Saad bin Ubada went out, and he mentioned it. Nasai also narrated it through this same route (3650), and Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (2500). Its chain is connected, and the grandfather of Saeed bin Amr is Saeed bin Saad bin Ubada, who belongs to the younger companions. Ibn Abdul-Barr said in Tamhid 21/93, "This hadith is musnad, because Saeed bin Saad bin Ubada was a companion, from whom Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf and others narrated, and there is no objection to Shurahbil, his son, meeting his grandfather Saad bin Ubada. Moreover, this hadith of Saad bin Ubada concerning the story of his mother has been narrated as musnad through several routes, and also as maqtu with differing wordings."I say, he is referring to the earlier hadith of Ayesha and Ibn Abbas, and to the coming hadith of Anas and Saad bin Ubada.
