A man said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "My mother passed away suddenly, and I think that had she been able to speak, she would have given charity. May I give charity on her behalf?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes."
أن رجلا قال لرسول الله ﷺ: إن أمي اختلتت نفسها، وأراها لو تكلمت تصدقت، أفأتصدق عنها؟ فقال رسول الله ﷺ: نعم.
Malik narrated it in al-Aqdiyah (55) from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it as above. Bukhari narrated it in al-Wasaya (2760) from Ismail, from Malik, with the same wording. Muslim narrated it in zakat (1004) through other chains from Hisham, with a similar wording.As for his saying "uftulitat," it comes from al-falt, meaning to depart suddenly, from which comes the expression "that happened faltatan," meaning it happened all at once.
