After the people had dispersed from around Ubayy, Natil of the people of Sham said to him, "Old man, narrate to us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The first of people to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make known to him His blessings, which he will recognize.Allah will ask, "What did you do with them?"The man will reply, "I fought for Your sake until I was martyred."Allah will say, "You have lied. Rather, you fought so that it would be said you were brave, and so it was said." Then He will command that he be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.Next, a man who studied knowledge, taught it, and recited the Quran. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make known to him His blessings, which he will recognize.Allah will ask, "What did you do with them?"The man will reply, "I studied knowledge, taught it, and recited the Quran for Your sake."Allah will say, "You have lied. Rather, you studied knowledge so that it would be said you were a scholar, and you recited the Quran so that it would be said you were a reciter, and so it was said." Then He will command that he be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.Next, a man whom Allah had granted abundance, giving him every kind of wealth. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make known to him His blessings, which he will recognize.Allah will ask, "What did you do with them?"The man will reply, "I left no cause that You love to be supported with spending except that I spent for it for Your sake."Allah will say, "You have lied. Rather, you did so that it would be said he is generous, and so it was said." Then He will command that he be dragged on his face and cast into the Fire.'"
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on leadership (1905), from Yahya bin Habib Harithi, who said, "Khalid bin Harith narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj narrated to us, Yunus bin Yusuf narrated to me, from Sulayman bin Yasar," and he related it.His statement, "Natil, a man of Syria," and in another version, "Natil the Syrian," refers to Natil bin Qays Juzami, the Syrian, from the people of Palestine. He was a follower of the Companions, and his father had been a companion. Natil was a leading figure among his people.
