The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shield yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: اتقوا النار ولو بشق تمرة.
Bazzar narrated it - Kashf Astar (934) - from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Muhammad bin Fadl told us, Hammad bin Salama told us, from Humayd, from Anas, and he related it. Haythami attributed it in Majma al-Zawaid (3/106) to Bazzar and to Tabarani in Awsat, and said, "The men of Bazzar's narration are the men of the sahih." I say, this is as he said, except that the chain contains Muhammad bin Fadl Sadusi, Abu Numan, known as Arim, whom the majority of scholars considered reliable, except that he became confused in his later years, as Bukhari stated. Abu Hatim said, "Arim became confused in his later years and lost his mind, so whoever heard from him before the confusion set in, his hearing is sahih." I say, no one has mentioned that Muhammad bin Bashshar was among those who heard from him after the confusion set in.Ibn Khuzayma narrated it in his Sahih (2430) through another route from Anas bin Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Protect yourselves from the Fire even with half a date." Its chain contains Sinan bin Saad Kindi, also said to be Saad bin Sinan Kindi, who is daif.On this subject there is also what has been reported from Abu Hurairah as a raised report, "Be wary of the Fire even with half a date." Bazzar narrated it - Kashf Astar (937) - from Ahmad bin Abdah, from Uthman bin Abdul-Rahman, who said, Muhammad bin Ziyad narrated from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Bazzar said, "It has been narrated from Abu Hurairah through a route other than this one, and this chain from Abu Hurairah is the best and most sahih chain narrated on this subject." I say, if this is the most sahih, then the others are weaker still, given that this one contains Uthman bin Abdul-Rahman, who is Jumahi. Bukhari said, "Unknown." Abu Hatim said, "He is not strong, his hadith may be written down but not relied upon." Ibn Adi said, "His hadith is objectionable," and in his biographical entry listed several objectionable hadiths, saying, "Most of these hadiths of Uthman which I have mentioned are not corroborated by the reliable narrators, and he has others besides what I have mentioned, most of what he narrates being objectionable either in chain or in text." I say, this particular hadith of his contains nothing objectionable, and Ibn Adi did not include it among the hadiths deemed objectionable against him. Dhahabi said in Mizan, "Ali bin Madini, Nasr bin Ali, and a group narrated from him, and he lived past one hundred and eighty, being fairly sound." Haythami understood from Bazzar's statement that he considered its hadith hasan, Majma al-Zawaid (3/106). Allah knows best what is correct. On this subject there is also what has been reported from Abdullah bin Masud, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let each of you protect his face from the Fire, even with half a date." Imam Ahmad narrated it (3679) from Ammar bin Muhammad, from Ibrahim, from Abu Ahwas, from Abdullah, and he related it. Ibrahim is Muslim Abdi, Abu Ishaq Hajari, whom the majority of scholars considered daif, among them Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, Abu Zura, Bukhari, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Abu Ahmad Hakim, and others. He is among the men cited by Ibn Majah. Hafiz Haythami erred in Majma al-Zawaid (3/105) when he said, after attributing it to Ahmad, "Its men are the men of the sahih." This is not so.Likewise, what has been reported from Numan bin Bashir does not hold up. Bazzar narrated it - Kashf Astar (935) - and its chain contains Ayub bin Jabir bin Sayyar Suhaymi, whom the majority of scholars considered daif, and Haythami faulted it on this basis in Majma al-Zawaid (3/106).Likewise, what has been reported from Abu Bakr does not hold up, that he said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon the steps of the pulpit saying, "Be wary of the Fire even with half a date, for it straightens the crooked, wards off an evil death, and does for the hungry what it does for the well-fed." Abu Yaala (85) narrated it, and Bazzar - Kashf Astar (933) - both from Muhammad bin Ismail bin Ali Wasasi, who said, Zayd bin Hubab Ukayli told us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Sulayman bin Ghusayl, from Shurahbil bin Saad, from Jabir bin Abdullah, from Abu Bakr Siddiq, who said (and he related it). Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated it from Zayd except Muhammad bin Ismail, and he was not corroborated in it, and it is not narrated from Abu Bakr except through this chain alone." I say, its chain is very daif, for Muhammad bin Ismail Wasasi Basri was mentioned by Hafiz in Mizan, who said, Ahmad bin Amr Bazzar Hafiz said, "He used to fabricate hadith," and Dhahabi said, following Daraqutni and others, that he is daif. Daraqutni said in Ilal (1/221-222), "It is narrated by Muhammad bin Ismail Wasasi through his chain, and he was not corroborated in it, and this Wasasi is daif, and others narrate it from Shurahbil bin Saad as a mursal report, not mentioning Jabir or Abu Bakr in it." Haythami faulted it on this basis in Majma al-Zawaid (3/105).Likewise, what has been reported from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ, "Be wary of the Fire even with half a date," does not hold up. Abu Yaala (2707) narrated it, and Tabarani in Kabir (12/163), both from the hadith of Muhammad bin Bashshar Bundar, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Uthman Bakrawi told us, from Ismail bin Muslim Makki, from Abu Raja, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Its chain contains Abdul-Rahman bin Uthman, Abu Bahr Bakrawi. Ahmad said, "People have discarded his hadith." Abbas Duri reported from Ibn Main that he is daif, and Nasai likewise deemed him daif. Haythami faulted it on this basis in Majma al-Zawaid (3/105-106), except that he said, "There is something to be said about him, though he has been deemed reliable."On this subject there are other daif hadiths as well. See Majma al-Zawaid (3/105-106).
