The Prophet ﷺ sent me out as a collector of zakat. I passed by a man, and when he gathered his wealth before me, I found that he owed nothing more than a one-year-old female camel.I said to him, "Hand over a one-year-old female camel, for that is your zakat."He replied, "That is an animal with no milk and unfit for riding. But here is a young, large, fat she-camel. Take her instead."I said to him, "I cannot take what I have not been instructed to take. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is near you. If you wish to go to him and present to him what you have offered me, then do so. If he accepts it from you, I will accept it. If he turns it back to you, I will turn it back."He said, "Then I will do so." He set out with me, taking along the she-camel he had offered me, until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He said to him, "Prophet of Allah, your messenger came to me to take the zakat due on my wealth. By Allah, never before has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ nor any envoy of his assessed my wealth. So I gathered my wealth for him, and he claimed that what I owed was a one-year-old female camel, an animal with no milk and unfit for riding. I offered him a young, large she-camel for him to take, but he refused. Here she is, Messenger of Allah. I have brought her to you. Take her."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "That one-year-old camel is what you owe. But if you give more voluntarily, Allah will reward you for it, and we accept it from you."He said, "Here she is, Messenger of Allah. I have brought her to you. Take her."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that she be received and prayed for blessing in his wealth.
Abu Dawud (1583) narrated it from Muhammad bin Mansur, who said, Yaqub bin Ibrahim told us, my father told us, from Ibn Ishaq who said, Abdullah bin Abu Bakr told me, from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Zurara, from Umara bin Amr bin Hazm, from Ubayy bin Kaab, who said (then he related it).Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who is a mudallis, but he stated clearly that he heard it directly. Ibn Khuzayma (2277) graded it sahih, as did Ibn Hibban (3269), and Hakim (1/399-400), and from him Bayhaqi (4/96), all of them through this same route. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim."Umara bin Amr said, "Then time struck its blow, and Marwan put me in charge of collecting the zakat of Bali and Uzra in the era of Muawiya, so I passed by this man, and I collected zakat on his wealth, thirty mature she-camels, including a stud camel taken from a herd of fifteen hundred camels."Ibn Ishaq said, I asked Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, "What is meant by its stud camel?" He said, "In the year when a man's zakat-eligible camels reach thirty mature she-camels, a stud camel is taken from among them."On this subject there is also what was narrated from Mughira bin Shuba, who said, Uthman bin Abu As said, while he was a young man, "We came as a delegation to the Prophet ﷺ, and he found me to be the most accomplished of them in learning the Quran, and I had excelled them by learning Surah Baqarah. So the Prophet ﷺ said, 'I have appointed you over your companions, even though you are the youngest of them. When you lead a people in prayer, pace it according to the weakest among them, for behind you stand the elderly, the young, the weak, and those with needs. And when you are a zakat collector, do not take the animal about to give birth, nor the one that has recently given birth, nor the stud ram of the sheep, for the man's prized possession is more rightfully his than yours. And do not touch the Quran except in a state of purity. And know that Umrah is the lesser Hajj, and that one Umrah is better than this world and everything in it, and one Hajj is better than an Umrah.'"Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (9/33) from Ahmad bin Amr Khallal Makki, who said, Yaqub bin Humayd told us, Hisham bin Sulayman told us, from Ismail bin Rafi, from Muhammad bin Saeed bin Abdul-Malik, from Mughira bin Shuba, and he related it.Haythami said in Al-Majma (74), "It contains Hisham bin Sulayman, whom a group of scholars have declared daif, though Bukhari deemed him reliable."I say, in his biographical entry in Tahzib, Bukhari said in the Book of Sales, "Ibrahim bin Munzir told me, Hisham told us, Ibn Jurayj told us, I heard Ibn Abu Mulayka relating from Nafi, the freed slave of Ibn Umar, concerning the sale of fruit once it has begun to ripen."Hafiz said, so Bukhari related this hadith of his in this passage among the corroborating narrations, and he presented it using the wording of supporting reports, which is why earlier scholars did not count him among his narrators. Moreover, he narrated it from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, whereas his narration from anyone other than Ibn Jurayj contains error, as Aqeeli stated.I say, and this hadith is not from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj. Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Acceptable."As for Haythami's statement, "Bukhari deemed him reliable," I did not find this either in Tarikh al-Kabir or in Tahzib Kamal and its derivative works, so this needs to be verified.
