From his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "For every five grazing camels, there is zakat due."
عن أبيه، عن جده، أن النبي ﷺ قال: في كل خمس ذود سائمة صدقة.
Tabarani related it in Mujam al-Awsat (Majma Bahrayn 1353) from Muhammad bin Jafar bin Sam, who said, Zubayr bin Bakkar told us, Abdul-Majid bin Abdul-Aziz told us, from Mamar, from Zuhri, who said, A man from Banu Qushayr, called Bahz bin Hakeem, told me, from his father, from his grandfather, and he related it.Haythami said in Majma (3/70), after attributing it to Awsat, "Its narrators are trustworthy, except for Tabarani's teacher Muhammad bin Jafar bin Sam, whom I do not know." He also said, "Muawiya bin Hayda Qushayri has a hadith related by Abu Dawud other than this one."I say, it is as he said, for his hadith in Abu Dawud differs from this one, and it will come in the chapter on the punishment in this world for withholding zakat. As for Tabarani's teacher Muhammad bin Jafar bin Sam, he has been corroborated. Khatib related it in his Tarikh (8/467) from Abul-Husayn Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Hammad Waiz, who said, Abu Bakr Yusuf bin Yaqub bin Ishaq bin Bahlul Tanukhi told us by dictation, Zubayr bin Bakkar told us with his chain, and he related it similarly. Its chain is hasan on account of Bahz bin Hakeem and his father, for both are truthful. However, Daraqutni identified a defect in it, saying, "Abdul-Majid bin Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Rawwad relates it from Mamar, and there is disagreement over his transmission. Zubayr bin Bakkar related it from Abdul-Majid, from Mamar, from Zuhri, from Bahz bin Hakeem, but he erred in mentioning Zuhri. The correct version is from Abdul-Majid, from Mamar, from Bahz bin Hakeem. Muhammad bin Maymun Khayyat likewise related it from Abdul-Majid in this way." End of quote. See Ilal (7/90).Khatib, after quoting Daraqutni's statement, said, "Abdullah bin Mubarak likewise related it from Mamar, from Bahz," then he traced its chain.I say, it is not impossible that Mamar related from Bahz bin Hakeem hadiths concerning zakat by two routes, one of them through Zuhri from him, as in this hadith before us, and the other from Bahz bin Hakeem directly without the intermediary of Zuhri, as in the hadith in Abu Dawud and elsewhere concerning the punishment for withholding zakat. For Khatib established that Zuhri related from Bahz bin Hakeem, and between the deaths of the two there is a gap of about thirty-five years, since Zuhri died in the year 125 AH, while Bahz bin Hakeem died in the year 160. So it would be a mistake to treat the hadiths of Bahz bin Hakeem concerning zakat as a single hadith. See for further detail the chapter on the punishment in this world for withholding zakat.
