The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for me and said, "Put on your clothes and your weapons, then come to me."I came to him while he was performing ablution. He looked me up and down, then lowered his gaze and said, "I intend to send you out in command of an army, and Allah will keep you safe and grant you spoils. I will allot you a generous share of wealth."I said, "Messenger of Allah, I did not embrace Islam for the sake of wealth. I embraced Islam out of desire for Islam itself and to be with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Amr, how excellent is good wealth in the hands of a righteous man."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (17763), as did Tabarani in al-Awsat (3213), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3210), as did Hakim (2/236). All of them transmitted it through the route of Musa bin Ali, from his father, who said, "I heard Amr bin As say" (then he related it). Its isnad is sahih, and Hakim likewise graded it sahih.Musa bin Ali, with the diminutive form, is the son of Rabah al-Lakhmi, one of the narrators found in Muslim. He was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Main, Ahmad, Nasai, Ibn Saad, and a group of others.Ibn Hibban said, "Ali bin Rabah heard this report from Amr bin As, and he also heard it from Abu Qays instead of Amr, from Amr, and both routes are preserved."As for his saying, "azabu zabatan," with the letters zay and ain, it means giving or granting. It is said, "He granted him a zabah from his wealth," meaning he gave him a single portion of it. And al-zab is a portion of wealth. In some hadith sources it appears as "arghabu raghbatan," and its meaning is likewise sound, as if some narrators altered the transmitted wording, bringing forth something that matched its meaning.
