Ahnaf bin Qays reported,

Ahnaf bin Qays said, I was sitting with a group of notables from Quraysh when a man with rough hair, rough clothing, and a rough appearance came forward and stood before them. He greeted them, then said, "Give the disbelievers tidings of stones that will be heated in the fire of Hell and then placed on the nipple of one of them until it comes out from the tip of his shoulder, and placed on the tip of his shoulder until it comes out from the nipple of his breast, making him quake."Then he turned away and sat down by a pillar. I followed him and sat beside him, not knowing who he was.I said to him, "I do not think these people liked what you said."He replied, "They understand nothing. My dear friend said to me..."I asked, "Who is your dear friend?"He said, "The Prophet ﷺ. He said to me, 'Abu Dharr, can you see anything?'" He continued, "I looked at the sun to see how much of the day remained, thinking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was going to send me on an errand. I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'I would not wish to have gold the size of Mount Uhud and spend all of it, except for three dinars.' These people understand nothing. They merely amass the goods of this world. By Allah, I will not ask them for anything of this world, nor will I seek their ruling on matters of religion, until I meet Allah."In another narration, "Give the hoarders tidings of branding irons on their backs that will come out through their sides, and branding irons applied to the back of their necks that will come out through their foreheads."He then withdrew and sat down. I asked, "Who is this?" They replied, "This is Abu Dharr."So I went up to him and said, "What was it I heard you saying just now?"He said, "I only said something I had heard from their Prophet ﷺ."I asked, "What do you say about this stipend?"He said, "Take it, for today it is a help. But when it becomes a price for your religion, leave it."
