Ahnaf bin Qays said, I was sitting with a group of notables from Quraysh when a man with rough hair, rough clothing, and a rough appearance came forward and stood before them. He greeted them, then said, "Give the disbelievers tidings of stones that will be heated in the fire of Hell and then placed on the nipple of one of them until it comes out from the tip of his shoulder, and placed on the tip of his shoulder until it comes out from the nipple of his breast, making him quake."Then he turned away and sat down by a pillar. I followed him and sat beside him, not knowing who he was.I said to him, "I do not think these people liked what you said."He replied, "They understand nothing. My dear friend said to me..."I asked, "Who is your dear friend?"He said, "The Prophet ﷺ. He said to me, 'Abu Dharr, can you see anything?'" He continued, "I looked at the sun to see how much of the day remained, thinking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was going to send me on an errand. I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'I would not wish to have gold the size of Mount Uhud and spend all of it, except for three dinars.' These people understand nothing. They merely amass the goods of this world. By Allah, I will not ask them for anything of this world, nor will I seek their ruling on matters of religion, until I meet Allah."In another narration, "Give the hoarders tidings of branding irons on their backs that will come out through their sides, and branding irons applied to the back of their necks that will come out through their foreheads."He then withdrew and sat down. I asked, "Who is this?" They replied, "This is Abu Dharr."So I went up to him and said, "What was it I heard you saying just now?"He said, "I only said something I had heard from their Prophet ﷺ."I asked, "What do you say about this stipend?"He said, "Take it, for today it is a help. But when it becomes a price for your religion, leave it."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Zakat (1407-1408), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (992), both through Jareeri, from Abu Ala, from Ahnaf, who narrated it. The second narration was related by Muslim (992:35), Shayban bin Farroukh told us, Abu Ashhab told us, Khulayd Asri told us, from Ahnaf bin Qays, who said, I was among a group of Quraysh. His words, "the bone of his shoulder trembled," the "nughd" with a damma on the nun is the small bone at the edge of the shoulder, or at the top of the shoulder. His words, "trembling" means it moves and shakes. His words, "with radf," with a fatha on the ra and a sukun on the dotted letter, are heated stones, the singular of which is radfah.A note. Abu Abbas Qurtubi said, the payment that Abu Dharr was asked about is what a man is given from the treasury in a manner he is entitled to, and this is what the Prophet ﷺ referred to when he said, "Whatever comes to you of this wealth while you are not seeking a position for it nor asking for it, take it, but whatever does not come to you in this way, do not chase after it with your own desire." And his words, "when it is the price of your religion" means, if you can only obtain it through an impermissible means, then do not pay any attention to it.
