The Prophet ﷺ said, "Your Lord is modest and generous. He is too shy, when His servant raises his hands to Him, to return them empty."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: إن ربكم حيي كريم يستحي من عبده إذا رفع يديه إليه أن يردهما صفرا.
Abu Dawud (1488), Tirmidhi (3556), and Ibn Majah (3865) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (876) and Hakim (1/497) graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Jafar bin Maymun, from Abu Uthman Nahdi, from Salman Farsi, and he mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith, and some of them narrated it without raising it to the Prophet." Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari (11/143), "Its chain is good." I say, it is hasan, except that it does not meet the criteria of either of the two sheikhs, for Jafar bin Maymun, who is Tamimi, is among the narrators of the Sunan only, and furthermore there is disagreement about him. The summary of his case, as Ibn Adi said, is, "I have not seen his hadiths to be objectionable, and I hope there is no harm in him, and his hadith is to be recorded." This is as he said. Moreover, he was not alone in narrating it, for Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (6130) and in Al-Dua (202), and Bayhaqi in Dawat Kabir (181), and Ibn Hibban (880) and Hakim (1/535) graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Muhammad bin Zubarqan, from Sulayman Taymi, from Abu Uthman, from Salman, marfu, similarly. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs." This is as he said, for Muhammad bin Zubarqan, Abu Hammam Ahwazi, is among the narrators of the two sheikhs, except that he is "truthful, though he sometimes errs," as Hafiz said in Taqrib. He is acceptable as a corroborating witness.Baghawi narrated it in Sharh al-Sunnah (1385) through another route from Abul-Maalla, who said, Abu Uthman Nahdi narrated to us, saying, I heard Salman Farsi say, and he mentioned it marfu, and at the end of the hadith he said, "until He places good in them." As for Tirmidhi's statement, "Some of them narrated it without raising it to the Prophet," this does no harm, because whoever raised it to the Prophet possesses additional knowledge, and among those who did not raise it was Yazid bin Harun, from Sulayman Taymi, from Abu Uthman, from Salman, as his own statement.Through this route Imam Ahmad (23714) narrated it, and Hakim (1/497), and Bayhaqi in Asma wa Sifat (1013), and Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs." However, Hakim confirmed that it was connected through Jafar bin Maymun, and he said, "It has a corroborating witness with a sahih chain from the hadith of Anas bin Malik." End of quote.Dhahabi said in Uluww (109), after mentioning the hadith of Salman Farsi, "This is a well-known hadith, narrated from the Prophet also by Ali bin Abu Talib, Ibn Umar, Anas, and others." End of quote. His statement "sifr" with a kasrah on the sad means empty, as it is said, "a house that is sifr of goods," meaning empty.
