The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, mentioning the disbeliever when his soul is taken, "His soul is returned to his body, and two angels of severe rebuke come to him. They sit him up and rebuke him. They ask him, 'Who is your Lord?'He replies, 'I do not know.'They ask him, 'What is your religion?'He replies, 'I do not know.'He is asked, 'Who is this Prophet who was sent among you?'He replies, 'I heard the people saying something, but I do not know.'They say, 'You did not know.'That is the meaning of the saying of Allah, "Allah leads the wrongdoers astray, and Allah does what He wills" [Ibrahim 14:27]."

Tabari narrated it in his tafsir (13/218) via Abu Awana, from Amash, from Minhal bin Amr, from Zazan, from Bara, and he related it. It is a long hadith that was already mentioned in the previous chapter. This is the one about which Bayhaqi said in Ithbat Azab Qabr (27), "This is a lengthy hadith with a sahih isnad, narrated by a group of trustworthy imams from Amash." Its isnad is hasan because of Minhal bin Amr, for he is "truthful."As for the meaning of Allah's statement, "Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers, and Allah does what He wills" [Ibrahim 14:27], it means His making them firm in this worldly life through faith in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and in the Hereafter through the same thing that made them firm in this worldly life, that being in their graves when they are questioned about what they held to of monotheism and faith in His Messenger ﷺ. And His statement, "and in the Hereafter, and Allah sends astray the wrongdoers" [Ibrahim 14:27], means that Allah does not grant the hypocrite and the disbeliever success, whether in this worldly life or in the Hereafter at the time of questioning in the grave, in the way He guided the believer to faith in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. See Tafsir Tabari (13/218).As for what was narrated from Ayesha, that she said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is through me that the people of the graves are tested, and it was concerning me that this verse was revealed, "Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word" [Ibrahim 14:27]," this is daif. Bayhaqi narrated it in Ithbat Azab Qabr (15) via Muhammad bin Ishaq Saghani, who said, Muhammad bin Umar Aslami narrated to us, Abdul-Salam bin Hafs said, narrated to us from Sharik bin Abu Nimr, from Ata bin Yasar, from Ayesha, who related it.Muhammad bin Umar is Waqidi Aslami, who is discarded as a narrator.
