We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Khaybar, and we did not gain any gold or silver as spoils, only goods, clothing, and other items. Rifa bin Zayd presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a black slave called Midam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ headed toward Wadi al-Qura, and when we reached Wadi al-Qura, while Midam was unloading the saddle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a stray arrow came and struck him, killing him.The people said, "Congratulations to him on Paradise."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No indeed, by the One in whose hand my soul is. The cloak he took on the day of Khaybar from the spoils, before they had been distributed, will blaze upon him with fire."When the people heard this, a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a sandal strap, or two sandal straps, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A sandal strap, or two sandal straps, of fire."
Malik narrated it in Jihad (25) from Thawr bin Zayd Deeli, from Abu Ghayth Salim, the freed slave of Ibn Mutee, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it as mentioned. Bukhari narrated it in Maghazi (4234), and Muslim in Iman (183), both through the route of Malik, in the same manner. As for what was narrated from Abu Rafi, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he prayed Asr, would sometimes go to Banu Abdul-Ashhal and converse with them until it was time to descend for Maghrib. He said, Abu Rafi said, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hurrying toward Maghrib, he passed by Baqi and said, "Shame on you, shame on you," twice. This alarmed me greatly and I fell back, thinking he meant me. He said, "What is the matter with you? Walk on." I said, "Have I done something wrong, Messenger of Allah?" He said, "What do you mean?" I said, "You expressed disgust at me." He said, "No, but this is the grave of so-and-so. I sent him as a tax collector over such-and-such tribe, and he embezzled a cloak, so he is now clothed in its like from the Fire."This hadith contains a narrator who was not established as trustworthy. Nasai narrated it (862, 863), Imam Ahmad (27192), Ibn Khuzayma (2337), and Bayhaqi in Ithbat Azab Qabr (149), all of them through routes from Ibn Jurayj, from Manbudh, a man from the household of Abu Rafi, from Fadl bin Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi, from Abu Rafi, and he related it as mentioned. In its chain is Manbudh, whose trustworthiness was not established by anyone, and the Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Acceptable," meaning if corroborated. Likewise Fadl bin Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi Madani narrated from his father and from his grandfather, but no one established his trustworthiness except Ibn Hibban, and therefore the Hafiz said of him, "Acceptable," meaning if corroborated.
