The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left the slain of Badr for three days, then he came to them, stood over them, and called out to them, saying, "Abu Jahl bin Hisham, Umaya bin Khalaf, Utba bin Rabia, Shayba bin Rabia, have you not found what your Lord promised you to be true?"Umar heard the words of the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, how can they hear, and how can they respond, when they have already become rotten corpses?"The Prophet ﷺ replied, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, you do not hear what I am saying any better than they do, but they are unable to answer."Then he ordered that they be dragged away, and they were thrown into the well of Badr.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Paradise (2874) through Hammad bin Salama, from Thabit Bunani, from Anas bin Malik, as mentioned above. As for what was narrated from Abdullah bin Masud, who said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood over the people of the well and said, "O people of the well, did you find what your Lord promised to be true? For I have found what my Lord promised me to be true." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, can they hear?" He said, "You are no more able to hear what I say than they are, but today they do not answer." This is daif. Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (10/198) through Ashath bin Sawwar, from Abu Ishaq, from Amr bin Maymun, from Abdullah, as mentioned above. Ashath bin Sawwar Kindi, although Muslim narrated from him in supporting narrations, the majority hold him to be daif, which is why Hafiz in Taqrib applied to him the term "daif," yet he contradicted himself in Fath al-Bari (7/303), where he said, "Tabarani has a similar hadith from Ibn Masud with a sahih chain." As for Hafiz Haythami's statement in Majma (6/91), "and its men are the men of Sahih," this is correct, because Ashath bin Sawwar is among the men of Muslim, as noted above.Likewise, what was narrated from Abdullah bin Saydan, from his father, is not sound. He said, The Prophet ﷺ looked out over the people of the well and said, "O people of the well, did you find what your Lord promised to be true?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, can they hear?" He said, "They hear just as you hear, but they do not answer." Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (1977). Haythami said in Majma (6/91), "Abdullah bin Saydan is majhul (unknown)." I say, it is as he said. Ibn Adi, Lalikai, and others have declared him majhul, and Bukhari said, "His hadith is not corroborated." He has a biographical entry in Al-Kamil and Al-Mizan, and he is Abdullah bin Saydan Matrudi.
