Whenever Uthman bin Affan stood at a grave, he would weep until his beard was soaked. Someone said to him, "You remember Paradise and the Fire and do not weep, yet you weep at this?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. Whoever is delivered from it will find what comes after easier, and whoever is not delivered from it will find what comes after harder.'"He continued, "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have never seen any sight more dreadful than the grave.'"
Tirmidhi (2308) and Ibn Majah (4267) both narrated it from the hadith of Yahya bin Main, who said, Hisham bin Yusuf narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Buhayr, from Hani, the freedman of Uthman, and he mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib, we do not know it except from the hadith of Hisham bin Yusuf." Hakim also reported it (1/371) and graded the chain sahih just as before him. Dhahabi commented on this, saying, "Ibn Buhayr is not a reliable authority, though some strengthen him, and Hani has several narrators from him, but he is not mentioned in the six books."I say, Abdullah bin Buhayr is Ibn Raysan, with fatha on the ra and sukun on the ya, al-Muradi, Abu Waail al-Qass al-Yamani al-Sanaani. Yahya bin Main said, he is thiqah. Ali bin Madini said, I heard Hisham bin Yusuf, when he was asked about Abdullah bin Buhayr al-Qass who narrated from Hani the freedman of Uthman, and he said, "He mastered what he heard." Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (8/331), and said in Majruhin, Abu Waail al-Qass, whose name is Abdullah bin Buhayr al-Sanaani, is not the same as Abdullah bin Buhayr bin Raysan, that one is thiqah, while this one narrates from Urwa bin Muhammad and Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid al-Sanaani strange narrations as though they were flawed, and it is not permissible to use him as evidence. So Ibn Hibban made them two men, one thiqah and the other daif, and the narrator here, Abdullah bin Buhayr bin Raysan, is the thiqah one.As for Hani the freedman of Uthman, he is Abu Saeed al-Barbari. Nasai said of him, there is no harm in him. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the thiqat, and Dhahabi said in Kashif, "Declared thiqah." So his hadith is hasan. Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah narrated from him, and Dhahabi pointed to this.As for what is narrated from Abu Saeed marfu, "The grave is either a meadow among the meadows of Paradise, or a pit among the pits of the Fire," it is daif. Tirmidhi narrated it (2460) from Muhammad bin Ahmad, who is Ibn Madawayh, Qasim bin Hakam al-Urani narrated to us, Ubaydullah bin Walid al-Wassafi narrated to us, from Atiya, from Abu Saeed, and he mentioned it in a longer context that will come in its place. Tirmidhi said, a gharib hadith, we do not know it except from this route.I say, in it is Atiya, who is Ibn Saad al-Awfi, whom Nasai declared daif. Abu Dawud said, he is not someone to be relied upon. In Taqrib it says, "Truthful but errs frequently, was a Shia and a mudallis." The narrator from him, Ubaydullah bin Walid al-Wassafi, the people of knowledge unanimously declare him daif.Likewise, what Bayhaqi narrated in Ithbat Azab Qabr (61) through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Sanaani, Muhammad bin Umar Waqidi narrated to us, that Salama the nephew of Umar, from Umar bin Shabba bin Abu Kathir al-Ashjai, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar marfu, "The grave is a pit among the pits of Hell, or a meadow among the meadows of Paradise," is not sound, for Waqidi is matruk.Likewise, what is narrated from Abu Hurairah, who said, we went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a funeral, and he sat by one of the graves and said, "Not a day passes over this grave but it calls out with a clear, eloquent voice, O son of Adam, how could you forget me? Did you not know that I am the house of solitude, the house of estrangement, the house of loneliness, the house of worms, and the house of constriction, except for the one whom Allah has granted ease in it?" Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The grave is either a meadow among the meadows of Paradise, or a pit among the pits of the Fire," narrated by Tabarani in Awsat, is not sound. Haythami said in Majma (3/46), "In it is Muhammad bin Ayub bin Suwayd, and he is daif."I say, rather he narrated from his father, from Uzai, fabricated things, and Abu Zura used to say, I saw this shaykh insert fabricated things into his father's book in fresh ink, and he would narrate them. See Majruhin (1001).
