Amr bin Maymun reported,

I saw Umar bin Khattab when he said, "Abdullah bin Umar, go to Umm Muiminin Ayesha and say, 'Umar bin Khattab sends you greetings of peace,' then ask her permission for me to be buried beside my two companions."She replied, "I had wanted that place for myself, but today I will prefer him over myself."When Abdullah returned, Umar asked him, "What news do you bring?"He answered, "She has granted you permission, Commander of the Faithful."Umar said, "Nothing was more important to me than that resting place. When I have died, carry me there, then offer the greeting of peace and say, 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission to enter.' If she grants me permission, then bury me there. Otherwise, take me back to the graveyard of the Muslims.I know of no one more deserving of this matter of leadership than these few men with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he passed away. Whomever they appoint as my successor, he is the caliph, so listen to him and obey." He then named Uthman, Ali, Talha, Zubayr, Abdul Rahman bin Awf, and Saad bin Abu Waqqas.A young man from the Ansar entered and said, "Receive glad tidings, Commander of the Faithful, with good news from Allah. You had what you know of early precedence in Islam. Then you were made caliph and ruled with justice. And now, after all this, martyrdom."Umar replied, "My nephew, I only wish it would be a wash, with nothing counted against me and nothing in my favor.I enjoin upon the caliph who comes after me to treat the early Muhajirun well, to recognize their rights, and to preserve their honor. I enjoin him to treat the Ansar well, those who settled in the home and embraced the faith, that he accept from those who do good among them and overlook the faults of those who err. I enjoin him concerning the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger ﷺ, that he fulfill their pledge, fight in their defense, and not burden them beyond their capacity."

عن عمرو بن ميمون الأودي قال

رأيت عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه قال: يا عبد الله بن عمر، اذهب إلى أم المؤمنين عائشة رضي الله عنها فقل: يقرأ عمر بن الخطاب عليك السلام، ثم سلها أن أدفن مع صاحبي، قالت: كنت أريد لنفسي، فلأوثرنه اليوم على نفسي، فلما أقبل قال له: ما لديك؟ قال: أذنت لك يا أمير المؤمنين، قال: ما كان شيء أهم إلي من ذلك المضجع، فإذا قبضت فاحملوني، ثم سلموا، ثم قل: يستأذن عمر بن الخطاب، فإن أذنت لي فادفنوني، وإلا فردوني إلى مقابر المسلمين، إني لا أعلم أحدا أحق بهذا الأمر من هؤلاء النفر الذين توفي رسول الله ﷺ وهو عنهم راض، فمن استخلفوا بعدي فهو الخليفة فاسمعوا له وأطيعوا فسمى عثمان وعليا وطلحة والزبير وعبد الرحمن بن عوف وسعد بن أبي وقاص، وولج عليه شاب من الأنصار فقال: أبشر يا أمير المؤمنين ببشرى الله: كان لك من القدم في الإسلام ما قد علمت، ثم استخلفت فعدلت، ثم الشهادة بعد هذا كله، فقال: ليتني يا ابن أخي وذلك كفافا لا علي ولا لي، أوصي الخليفة من بعدي بالمهاجرين الأولين خيرا، أن يعرف لهم حقهم، وأن يحفظ لهم حرمتهم، وأوصيه بالأنصار خيرا، الذين تبوءوا الدار والإيمان أن يقبل من محسنهم، ويعفى عن مسيئهم، وأوصيه بذمة الله وذمة رسوله ﷺ أن يو في لهم بعهدهم، وأن يقاتل من ورائهم، وأن لا يكلفوا فوق طاقتهم.
