The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the slain be cast into the well, so they were thrown into it, except for Umaya bin Khalaf, whose body had swollen inside his armor until it filled it. When they tried to move him, his flesh began to fall apart, so they left him where he was and covered him with enough earth and stones to conceal him… The hadith continues at length and will appear in full in its proper place.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (26361) from Yaqub, who said, "My father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, 'Yazid bin Ruman narrated to me, from Urwa, from Ayesha,'" and he related it in full.It is found in Sirat bin Hisham (1/638-639) through this same route, and Ibn Hibban (7088) and Hakim (3/224) graded it sahih, with Hakim saying, "Sahih according to the criteria of Muslim."I say, its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, for if he states the mode of transmission explicitly, his hadith is hasan, since he is known to conceal some of his sources. Here, however, he has stated the mode of transmission explicitly, so the suspicion of concealment is removed from him.Al-qalib means the well, and his saying "tazayala" means that his flesh had come apart. In Madinah there were special graveyards for the polytheists and separate ones for the Muslims, as is clear from the hadith of Bashir bin Khassasiya, which will come in the chapter on the dislike of walking among the graves with sandals on. It can also be understood from his hadith that it is part of the sunnah to be buried in the general graveyard of the Muslims, since the Prophet ﷺ used to bury the dead in the Baqi graveyard, and it has never been established that he permitted burying any Muslim inside their own home. Rather, his saying, "Do not turn your houses into graves," as reported in Sahih Muslim, appears to require a prohibition against burial in houses. As for the burial of the Prophet ﷺ in his chamber, that was one of his special privileges , as indicated by the hadith of Abu Bakr
mentioned earlier. As for the burial of Abu Bakr and Umar alongside their companion, that was due to special circumstances, and no one else may be measured against them in this regard.
