The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a grave and asked, "Whose grave is this?"They replied, "It is the grave of so-and-so."He said, "Why did you not inform me?"They answered, "You were asleep, and we did not want to wake you."He said, "Do not do that. Call me for your funerals." Then he lined the people up before the grave and prayed over her.
Imam Ahmad (15673) narrated it from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Abdul-Aziz, meaning Ibn Muhammad Darawardi, told us, from Muhammad bin Zayd Taymi, from Abdullah bin Amir, from his father, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Abdul-Aziz Darawardi, for he is "hasan al-hadith."As for what Ibn Majah (1529) narrated from Yaqub bin Humayd bin Kasib, who said, Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad Darawardi told us with his chain similarly, and in it, a black woman died. Its chain is daif because the sheikh of Ibn Majah, namely Yaqub bin Humayd bin Kasib, was criticized by more than one scholar. Ibn Main said, "He is nothing." Abu Hatim said, "Daif in hadith." Nasai said, "He is nothing." I say, the hadith is hasan without him, as Imam Ahmad narrated it.On this subject there is also a report from Husayn bin Wahwah that Talha bin Bara, when he met the Prophet ﷺ, said, "O Messenger of Allah, command me as you wish and I will not disobey any command of yours." The Prophet ﷺ found this remarkable, since he was a boy, and said to him at that point, "Go and kill your father." He said, so he went off turning away to do it, but the Prophet called him back and said, "Come back, for I was not sent to sever family ties." Talha later fell ill, and the Prophet ﷺ came to visit him in winter, in cold and cloudy weather. When he left, he said to his family, "I see that death has already come upon Talha, so inform me of it so that I may attend and pray over him, and hurry." But the news did not reach the Prophet ﷺ among the Banu Salim bin Awf until Talha had died, and night had fallen over him. Among what Talha said was, "Bury me and let me join my Lord , and do not call the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for I fear the Jews may cause him harm on my account." The Prophet ﷺ was informed when morning came, and he came and stood at his grave, with the people lined up behind him, and said, "O Allah, meet Talha smiling at him, and let him smile at You."Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (4/33) from Musa bin Harun, who said, Umar bin Zurara Hadathi told us, Isa bin Yunus told us, from Saeed bin Uthman Balawi, from Urwa bin Saeed Ansari, from his father, from Husayn bin Wahwah, and he related it. Haythami said in Al-Majma (3/37), "The author of Al-Atraf attributed part of this to Abu Dawud, but I have not found it. Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir and its chain is hasan."I say, it is as the author of Al-Atraf said, for Abu Dawud narrated it (3159) in the chapter on hastening with the funeral and the dislike of delaying it, from Abdul-Raheem bin Mutarrif Ruwasi Abu Sufyan and Ahmad bin Junab, both of whom said, Isa told us, Abu Dawud said, he is Yunus, from Saeed bin Uthman Balawi, from Azra, and Abdul-Raheem said, Urwa bin Saeed Ansari, from his father, from Husayn bin Wahwah, that Talha bin Bara fell ill, and the Prophet ﷺ came to visit him and said, "I see that death has already come upon Talha, so inform me of it and hurry, for it is not fitting that the corpse of a Muslim be held back among his family."I say, in the chain is Urwa or Azra, who is "unknown," as Hafiz said in Taqrib, and Saeed bin Uthman Balawi, from whom no one narrated except Isa bin Yunus, and no one has confirmed him as reliable. Ibn Hibban merely mentioned him in Al-Thiqat (6/361) and mentioned no narrators from him other than Isa bin Yunus, so he too is "unknown." Hafiz classed him in Taqrib as "acceptable" because Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the reliable narrators. Ibn Abu Hatim gave his biography in Al-Jarh wal-Tadil (4/47) and said nothing about him.On this subject there is also a report from Burayda that the Prophet ﷺ prayed over a deceased person after he had been buried. Ibn Majah (1532) narrated it from Muhammad bin Humayd, who said, Mihran bin Abu Umar told us, from Abu Sinan, from Alqama bin Murthid, from Ibn Burayda, from his father, and he related it. Bayhaqi narrated it through this route (4/48) in a longer account. Muhammad bin Humayd is Ibn Habban Razi. Bukhari said of him, "There is something questionable in his hadith." Nasai said, "He is not reliable." Juzjani said, "Corrupt in doctrine, unreliable." Ibn Hibban said, "He alone transmits inverted reports that contradict the reliable narrators." Ibn Main held a favorable opinion of him and considered him reliable, but the majority opinion is the correct one regarding him. His sheikh, Mihran bin Abu Umar Attar, is disputed. Hafiz said, "Truthful but has delusions, poor in memory."Likewise, what is reported from Abu Saeed is not sound, that he said, there was a black woman who used to sweep the masjid, and she died at night. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of her death and said, "Why did you not inform me of her?" So he went out with his companions and stood at her grave, said the funeral prayer over her while the people stood behind him, prayed for her, and then left. Ibn Majah (1533) narrated it, and in its chain is Abdullah bin Lahia, about whom there is well known criticism, and no one narrated from him the report of Ubada. Busiri also declared it daif in Misbah Zujaja. The statements of the scholars on praying over a grave. Tirmidhi, after presenting the hadith of Ibn Abbas (1037), said, "Practice according to this is held by most scholars among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others, and it is the view of Shafii, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Some scholars said one should not pray over a grave, and this is the view of Malik bin Anas. Abdullah bin Mubarak said, if the deceased is buried without the funeral prayer being performed, the prayer should be performed at the grave." He mentioned this repeatedly, that Ibn Mubarak held the view of praying over a grave. Ahmad and Ishaq said the prayer over a grave may be performed up to a month later, and they said, "The most we have heard from Ibn Musayab is that the Prophet ﷺ prayed at the grave of the mother of Saad bin Ubada after a month had passed."He then presented the mursal report of Saeed bin Musayab, who said, the mother of Saad died while the Prophet ﷺ was absent, and when he returned he prayed over her, a month having already passed. The account ends here.
