He reported that a poor woman fell ill, and the Prophet ﷺ was informed of her illness. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit the poor and ask after them, so he said, "When she dies, let me know."Her funeral procession went out at night, and they disliked waking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was told what had happened with her, and he said, "Did I not order you to inform me about her?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, we did not want to bring you out at night and wake you."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, arranged the people in rows at her grave, and pronounced four takbirs.
أنه أخبره، أن مسكينة مرضت، فأخبر النبي ﷺ بمرضها، وكان رسول الله ﷺ يعود المساكين، ويسأل عنهم، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: إذا ماتت فآذنتموني بها فخرج بجنازتها ليلا، فكرهوا أن يوقظوا رسول الله ﷺ، فلما أصبح رسول الله ﷺ أخبر بالذي كان من شأنها فقال: ألم آمركم أن تؤذنوني بها؟ فقالوا: يا رسول الله كرهنا أن نخرجك ليلا، ونوقظك، فخرج رسول الله ﷺ حتى صف بالناس على قبرها، وكبر أربع تكبيرات.
Malik narrated it in al-Janaiz (15) from Ibn Shihab from Abu Umama bin Sahl, mentioning it. This is mursal, for Abu Umama, whose name was Saad and who was known by his kunya, had seen the Prophet but did not hear from him ﷺ. Nasai narrated it (1907) through the route of Malik. Bayhaqi (4/48) established the chain of this hadith, narrating it through the route of Uzai, who said, "Ibn Shihab informed me, from Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf al-Ansari, who said that one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ had informed him," then he mentioned the hadith at length, adding some further details in it.As for what was narrated from Abu Umama bin Sahl, from his father, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit the poor of the people of Madinah and attend their funerals when they died," he said, "A woman from the people of Awali died..." and so on. In it is Sufyan bin Husayn narrating from Zuhri, and he is daif in this regard. Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba narrated it in his Musannaf (3/361) from Saeed bin Yahya Himyari, from Sufyan bin Husayn with his chain. Abu Hatim judged this route to be mistaken, but he favored the narration of Zuhri from Abu Umama as mursal, as Malik narrated it, and the addition of a reliable narrator is acceptable. Uzai had added, "from one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ."
