The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the funeral prayer over a man from the Muslims, and I heard him say, "O Allah, so-and-so, son of so-and-so, is under Your protection and in the bond of Your safekeeping, so shield him from the trial of the grave and the torment of the Fire. You are the One worthy of fulfilling promises and truth," and in another narration, "and praise. O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, for You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful."
Abu Dawud (3202) and Ibn Majah (1499) both narrated it from Abdul-Rahman bin Ibrahim Dimashqi, who said, "Walid bin Muslim narrated to us," who said, "Marwan bin Jinah narrated to us," who said, "Yunus bin Maysara bin Halabas narrated to me from Wathila bin Asqa," and he mentioned the hadith, with both wordings being identical. Its chain is hasan because of Marwan bin Jinah Umawi, the client of theirs, Dimashqi, originally from Kufa. A group of scholars affirmed his reliability, while Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is written down but not relied upon." The Hafiz said in Taqrib, "There is no harm in him." I say, someone like him has his hadith graded hasan. As for Walid bin Muslim Qurashi, client of theirs, he engaged frequently in tadlis and taswiyah, but here he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, so the suspicion of tadlis is removed from him.Imam Ahmad (16018) also recorded it, and Ibn Hibban (3074) graded it sahih, both of them through routes from Walid bin Muslim with the same chain and similar wording.Regarding his statement, "the bond of your protection," some scholars said, "It was the custom of the Arabs to threaten one another, so when a man wanted to travel, he would take a pledge from the chief of each tribe, and he would be safe under it as long as he remained within its territory, until he reached the next one, where he would take a similar pledge. This is the 'bond of protection', meaning as long as he was within that tribe's land. Or it may derive from ijarah, meaning safety and support." This was stated by Munziri.
