The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over a funeral, and I memorized his supplication as he said, "Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his place of arrival and expand his place of entry. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of his sins as a white garment is cleansed of filth. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave," or "from the punishment of the Fire."He said, "I wished that I were that deceased person."
صلى رسول الله ﷺ على جنازة، فحفظت من دعائه وهو يقول: اللهم اغفر له وارحمه وعافه واعف عنه، وأكرم نزله ووسع مدخله، واغسله بالماء والثلج والبرد، ونقه من الخطايا كما نقيت الثوب الأبيض من الدنس، وأبدله دارا خيرا من داره، وأهلا خيرا من أهله وزوجا خيرا من زوجه، وأدخله الجنة وأعذه من عذاب القبر أو من عذاب النار قال: حتى تمنيت أن أكون أنا ذلك الميت.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Funerals (963) from Harun bin Saeed Ayli, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, Muawiya bin Salih informed me, from Habib bin Ubayd, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, who heard him say, I heard Awf bin Malik, and then he related the hadith. In another version he gives, coming through Ibn Wahb, who said, Amr bin Harith informed me, from Abu Hamza bin Sulaym, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, from his father, with this wording, "O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, pardon him and grant him well-being, honor his reception, make spacious his entry, wash him with water and snow and hail, cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of filth, give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse, and protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire."Tirmidhi narrated it (1025) through this same route in shortened form, with the wording, "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, wash him with hail, and cleanse him as a garment is cleansed." He said, Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, said, "The most sahih thing on this subject is this hadith."It is thus in the passive form, "as a white garment is cleansed," and this is the sahih wording, requiring no explanation. As for the wording "as I cleansed the white garment," it requires unpacking its meaning.
