A poor woman from al-Awali fell ill, and the Prophet ﷺ used to ask about her. He said, "If she dies, do not bury her until I have prayed over her."She passed away, and they brought her body to Madinah after the evening prayer. They found that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already gone to sleep, and they did not want to wake him, so they prayed over her and buried her at Baqi al-Gharqad.When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them about her, and they replied, "She has already been buried, Messenger of Allah. We came to you but found you asleep, and we did not want to wake you."He said, "Come along."He set off walking, and they walked with him until they showed him her grave. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood, and they lined up in rows behind him. He prayed over her, pronouncing four takbirs.
اشتكت امرأة بالعوالي مسكينة، ف كان النبي ﷺ يسألهم عنها، وقال: إن ماتت فلا تدفنوها حتى أصلي عليها، فتوفيت فجاؤا بها إلى المدينة بعد العتمة، فوجدوا رسول الله ﷺ قد نام فكرهوا أن يوقظوه، فصلوا عليها ودفنوها ببقيع الغرقد، فلما أصبح رسول الله ﷺ جاؤا فسألهم عنها، فقالوا: قد دفنت يا رسول الله، وقد جئناك فوجدناك نائما فكرهنا أن نوقظك، قال: فانطلقوا فانطلق يمشي ومشوا معه حتى أروه قبرها، فقام رسول الله ﷺ وصفوا وراءه فصلى عليها وكبر أربعا.
Nasai (1969) narrated it from Yunus bin Abdul-Ala, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, who said, Yunus narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Abu Umama bin Sahl informed me, and he related the hadith. The hadith is sahih, except that Abu Umama bin Sahl, whose name was Asad, is well known by his kunya, had seen the Prophet ﷺ but did not hear from him, and he is not the well-known companion Abu Umama Bahili.Bayhaqi (4/48) established the chain of this hadith, narrating it through the route of Uzai, who said, Ibn Shihab informed me, from Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf Ansari, that one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed him, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit the sick among the poor and weak Muslims, and would follow their funeral processions, and no one else would lead the funeral prayer over them but him. And a poor woman from the people of Awali... he then related the rest of the hadith in similar fashion, adding some further details, including that he said the takbir four times, as is said over funeral prayers.
