He was present at the funeral prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The people asked, "How shall we pray over him?"He replied, "Enter in successive groups."So they would enter through one door, pray over him, then leave through the other door. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was placed in the lahd grave, Mughira said, "Something at his feet has not been properly arranged."They said to him, "Then go in and fix it."So he entered and reached in his hand, touching his feet, then said, "Pour the earth over him."They poured the earth over him until it reached halfway up his shins, then he came out. He used to say, "I am the one among you who had the most recent contact with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
Ahmad narrated it (20766) from Bahz and Abu Kamil, who both said, Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Abu Imran, meaning Juni, from Abu Aseeb or Abu Aseem, and he mentioned it.Its isnad is sahih. Hafiz mentioned it in Talkhis (2/124) and remained silent about it.Abu Aseeb, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is well known by his kunya. It is said that his name was Ahmad, and it is said that he was Safina, the freed slave of Umm Salama, though the more correct view is that he was someone else, as stated in Isabah (4/133).Hafiz cited the hadith mentioned above in Isabah, in the biographical entry on "Abu Aseem," from Baghawi and Hakim Abu Ahmad, via the route of Hammad bin Salama, and said, "Abu Muslim Kajji likewise narrated it via the route of Hammad, and Ibn Manda cited it in the biographical entry on Abu Aseeb, where it appeared as Aseeb, with the letter ba." End of quote.I say, he failed to attribute it to Imam Ahmad. Baghawi then expressed doubt about Abu Aseeb's companionship, but did not state any basis for his doubt. Imam Ahmad, however, devoted a section to him in his Musnad and included the hadith there. In the hadith that follows it, concerning the plague, he said, "Abu Aseeb, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
