Imam Ahmad (14540) and Abu Yaala (2300) both narrated it from the hadith of Yahya bin Adam, who said, Qutbah bin Abdul-Aziz narrated to us, from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, and he mentioned it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3031).Hakim also narrated it (1/355) through another route, from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr, from Qutbah bin Abdul-Aziz, with his chain of transmission, in similar fashion. He said, "This is a hadith that is sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." This is as he said, except that Qutbah bin Abdul-Aziz, although Muslim narrated from him, is only "truthful" (saduq). As for Bayhaqi (3/405), he narrated it from his teacher Hakim through the route of Yahya bin Adam, from Qutbah, as mentioned before, and he transmitted from Ibn Main that he said, "No one raised it to the Prophet except Yahya bin Adam," and he said, "I do not think this hadith is anything but a mistake."I say, this is an error on the part of Yahya bin Main, despite his mastery in this field, for Yahya bin Adam was not alone in raising it to the Prophet. Rather, Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr also corroborated him, and he is a trustworthy and excellent narrator. Bayhaqi did not come across the narration of Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr, otherwise he would have responded to Ibn Main. He only narrated it from his teacher Hakim through the route of Yahya bin Adam, as mentioned before.Furthermore, the position held by the majority of scholars among the hadith specialists is that when there is disagreement over whether a hadith is raised to the Prophet or stopped at a companion, the correct ruling favors the raised version, because it constitutes an addition from a trustworthy narrator. There is no doubt about the reliability of Yahya bin Adam, as Nawawi said in Khulasah (3407). How much more so when he has been corroborated in raising it.Malik narrated (1/226) with a sahih chain of transmission from Asma bint Abu Bakr ا that she said to her family, "Perfume my garments with incense when I die, then embalm me, but do not scatter perfume on my shroud, and do not follow me with fire."
