A man was standing with the Prophet ﷺ at Arafah when he fell from his mount.Ayub said, "It broke his neck." Amr said, "It crushed him."He died, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Wash him with water and lote-leaves, shroud him in two garments, do not apply embalming perfume to him, and do not cover his head, for he will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment."Ayub said, "Pronouncing the talbiyah." Amr said, "As one pronouncing the talbiyah."
Bukhari narrated it in Funerals (1268), and Muslim in Funerals (1206), both from the hadith of Hammad bin Zayd, from Amr bin Dinar and Ayub, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said, then he related it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is close to it, except that it reverses what was transmitted from Ayub and Amr regarding the account of the fall and the talbiyah. His saying, "two garments," means in his two garments, as in the narration of Sufyan bin Uyayna from Amr in Muslim, and in the narration of Abu Bishr from Saeed bin Jubayr in Bukhari (1851). The two garments are the two ihram garments in which he had entered the state of ihram. His saying, "do not put perfume on him," means do not touch him with embalming perfume, a blend of scents compounded specifically for the deceased and not used for anything else. His saying, "do not cover his head," means do not shroud it. All of this was explained because he will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment reciting the talbiyah. This shows that the reason for the prohibition was that he was in the state of ihram, so when that reason ceases to apply, the prohibition ceases as well.Abu Dawud said (3238), "I heard Ahmad bin Hanbal say, 'This hadith contains five sunnahs, "Shroud him in his two garments," meaning the deceased should be shrouded in two garments. "Wash him with water and lote-tree leaves," meaning that lote-tree leaves should be used in all the washings. "Do not cover his head," and do not bring perfume near him, and the shroud should come from the entirety of his estate.'"
