She said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three white Sahuli garments, with neither a shirt nor a turban among them.
إن رسول الله ﷺ كفن في ثلاثة أثواب بيض سحولية، ليس فيها قميص ولا عمامة.
Malik narrated it in the Book of Funerals (5) from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, as I have related it. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1273) from Ismail, from Malik, with the same wording. Bukhari (1271) and Muslim (941/46) both narrated it through Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Hisham, with a similar wording. In another version from Hisham, with his chain going back to Ayesha, she said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wrapped in a Yemeni robe belonging to Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, but it was then removed from him, and he was shrouded in three Suhuli garments of Yemeni cloth, without a turban or a shirt. Then Abdullah picked up the robe and said, 'I will be shrouded in it.' Then he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not shrouded in it, so should I be shrouded in it?' So he gave it away in charity."Regarding the word "Suhuliyyah," in one version it appears as "Suhuliyyah Yamaniyyah," and in another as "Suhuliyyah made of cotton," as it appears in Muslim. Suhul is the plural of suhl, which refers to plain white cloth, made only from cotton. It is also transmitted with a fatha, in reference to Suhul, a village in Yemen. Azhari said, "With a fatha, it refers to the town, and with a damma, it refers to the garments."The compilers of the Sunan collections narrated it, Abu Dawud (3152), Tirmidhi (996), Nasai (1899), and Ibn Majah (1469), and in their versions, they mentioned to Ayesha what people were saying, "In two garments and a striped Hibarah cloth." She said, "They did indeed bring a striped Hibarah cloth, but they sent it back and did not shroud him in it." A striped Hibarah cloth means one with a checkered pattern.Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Ayesha is a hasan sahih hadith. Various narrations have been reported concerning the shroud of the Prophet ﷺ, but the hadith of Ayesha is the most sahih of the hadiths reported about the Prophet's shroud ﷺ, and the practice of most of the people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others is based on the hadith of Ayesha. Sufyan Thawri said, 'A man is to be shrouded in three garments, if you wish, in a shirt and two wrapping cloths, and if you wish, in three wrapping cloths. A single garment suffices if two cannot be found, and two garments suffice, though three are preferred by those who can obtain them.' This is also the view of Shafii, Ahmad, and Ishaq, who said, 'A woman is to be shrouded in five garments.'" End of quote.
