When the news of Jafar's death arrived, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Prepare food for the family of Jafar, for what has come to them is occupying them," or, "a matter has come that occupies them."
لما جاء نعي جعفر قال عبد الله النبي ﷺ: اصنعوا لآل جعفر طعاما، فقد أتاهم ما يشغلهم، أو أمر يشغلهم.
Abu Dawud (3132), Tirmidhi (998), and Ibn Majah (1610) all narrated it through Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Jafar bin Khalid narrated to me, from his father, from Abdullah bin Jafar, who mentioned it. The wording given is that of Ibn Majah, and the other two have wording close to it. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." He said, "Jafar bin Khalid is Ibn Sarah, and he is trustworthy, Ibn Jurayj narrated from him." Ahmad (1751) also narrated it, and Hakim (1/372) graded it sahih, both of them through Ibn Uyayna with the same chain.I say, Jafar's father is Khalid bin Sarah al-Makhzumi al-Makki. Tirmidhi graded his hadith hasan and also graded it sahih, and Hakim graded it sahih, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators. Hafiz said of him, "Truthful." As for his son Jafar, he is trustworthy, as Tirmidhi said.As for what is reported from Asma bint Umays, who said, "When Jafar was struck down, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his family and said, 'The household of Jafar have been occupied with the affair of their deceased, so prepare food for them,'" this narration contains unidentified narrators. Ibn Majah (1611) narrated it from Yahya bin Khalaf Abu Salama, who said, Abdul-Ala narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, Abdullah bin Abu Bakr narrated to me, from Umm Isa al-Jazzar, who said, Umm Awn, daughter of Muhammad bin Jafar, narrated to me, from her grandmother Asma bint Umays, who mentioned it.Imam Ahmad (27086) also narrated it through Muhammad bin Ishaq with his chain. In the chain, Umm Isa is not named, and likewise Umm Awn, and both of them are unidentified. Hafiz said, "Umm Isa al-Khuzaiyya, her status is not known." And he said, "Umm Awn, daughter of Muhammad bin Jafar bin Abu Talib, also called Umm Jafar, is 'acceptable,'" meaning when corroborated, but she has not been corroborated, so her hadith is "weak in transmission." On account of these two, Busiri also weakened it in Zawaid bin Majah. Haythami mentioned it in al-Majma (6/161) and said, "Ahmad narrated it, and it contains two women whom I have not found anyone to affirm as trustworthy or to criticize, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy," and it does not meet his conditions.
