The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage when I was suffering from a severe illness. I said, "Messenger of Allah, my pain has reached the state you see, and I am a man of wealth with no heir except a single daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No."I asked, "Then half?"He said, "No."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A third, and a third is plenty. It is better to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them destitute, begging from people. You will never spend anything seeking the pleasure of Allah without being rewarded for it, even the morsel you place in your wife's mouth."I said, "Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions depart?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered, "You will not be left behind to perform a righteous deed without it raising you in rank and station. Perhaps you will be left behind so that some people may benefit through you while others may be harmed by you. O Allah, complete the migration of my companions, and do not turn them back on their heels. But the unfortunate one is Saad bin Khawla." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him because he had died in Makkah.
Malik narrated it in the Book of Bequests (4), from Ibn Shihab, from Amir bin Saad bin Abu Waqqas, from his father, who said, and then he related the hadith. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1295), from Abdullah bin Yusuf, from Malik, with the same wording. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Bequests (1628), through several routes from Ibn Shihab with his chain of transmission, likewise. As for his saying, "But the wretched one is Saad bin Khawla," al-baish (the wretched one) is an active participle from baisa-yabas, used when someone is afflicted with bais, meaning harm. Saad bin Khawla was the husband of Subayah al-Aslamiyyah, a man from Banu Amir bin Luayy. He emigrated to Madinah and took part in Badr and other battles, then returned to Makkah of his own choosing, and died there during the Farewell Pilgrimage, so the Prophet ﷺ grieved for him. This is why Saad bin Abu Waqqas and the other emigrants became reluctant to die in Makkah. As for his saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him because he died in Makkah," it has been said that these are the words of Saad bin Abu Waqqas, and it has also been said that they are the words of Zuhri, and most people hold to this latter view.
