Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1301) from Bishr bin Hakam, who said, "Sufyan bin Uyayna narrated to us, Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha informed us, that he heard Anas," and he related it.Muslim narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2144) via Bahz, who said, "Sulayman bin Mughira narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas bin Malik, who said,'A son of Abu Talha by Umm Salim died. She said to her family, "Do not tell Abu Talha about his son until I am the one to tell him." He said, then he came, and she brought him dinner. He ate and drank. Then she adorned herself for him more beautifully than she had ever done before, and he had intercourse with her. When she saw that he was satisfied and had had relations with her, she said, "Abu Talha, what do you think, if some people lent something of theirs to a household, and the household then asked for it back, would they have the right to refuse them?" He said, "No." She said, "Then consider your son a reward with Allah."He became angry and said, "You left me until I had defiled myself, then you told me about my son?" So he went off until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and told him what had happened. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah bless the remainder of your night for both of you."'"He then related the hadith, which includes the story of the tahnik of Umm Salim's son.Abu Dawud Tayalisi narrated it in his Musnad (2168), from Sulayman bin Mughira, Hammad bin Salama, and Jafar bin Sulayman, all of them from Thabit, from Anas, and he related the story of Umm Salim with this chain of transmission in some detail. I will now relate it in full, because it contains many benefits. He said,Malik, the father of Anas, said to his wife Umm Salim, who was the mother of Anas, "This man," meaning the Prophet ﷺ, "forbids wine." So he set off until he reached Syria, and he died there. Then Abu Talha came and proposed to Umm Salim, speaking to her about it. She said, "Abu Talha, someone like you should not be refused, but you are a disbelieving man, and I am a Muslim woman, and it would not be right for me to marry you."He said, "What is that you want?" She said, "What do I want?" He said, "Gold and silver." She said, "I do not want gold or silver, I want your acceptance of Islam." He said, "Who will secure that for me?" She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will secure that for you."So Abu Talha set off intending to see the Prophet ﷺ, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting among his companions. When he saw him, he said, "Here comes Abu Talha, with the radiance of Islam between his eyes." He came and told the Prophet ﷺ what Umm Salim had said, and he married her on that condition.Thabit said, "We have never heard of a dowry greater than this. She was content with Islam as a dowry, and he married her. She was a woman with beautiful eyes, and somewhat small in stature. She remained with him until she bore him a son, and Abu Talha loved him intensely. Then the boy fell ill, and Abu Talha was humbled by his illness, or was shaken by it. Abu Talha then went off to see the Prophet ﷺ, and the boy died.Umm Salim said, 'No one is to announce the death of his son to Abu Talha until I am the one to announce it to him.' So she prepared the boy and laid him out. Abu Talha came from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and entered upon her, and he said, 'How is my son?'She said, 'Abu Talha, he has not been as calm since he fell ill as he is right now.' He said, 'Praise be to Allah.' She brought him his dinner and he ate from it, then she got up, perfumed herself, and presented herself to him, and he had relations with her.When she knew that he had eaten and had had relations with her, she said, 'Abu Talha, what do you think, if some people lent a loan of theirs to some people, and those people then asked for it back, would they have the right to refuse them?' He said, 'No.'She said, 'Allah had lent you your son as a loan, then took him back to Himself. So consider your son a reward with Allah, and be patient.'He became angry and said, 'You left me until I had done what I did, then you told me my son had died?' Then he went in the morning to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'May Allah bless the remainder of your night for both of you.'"She conceived as a result of that. Umm Salim used to travel with the Prophet ﷺ, going out with him when he went out, and coming in with him when he came in. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When she gives birth, bring the boy to me."Labor pains came upon her on the night they drew near Madinah, and she said, "O Allah, I used to enter when Your Prophet entered, and go out when Your Prophet went out, and now this matter has come upon me." Then she gave birth to a boy.She said to her son Anas, "Take the boy to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So Anas took the boy and went with him to the Prophet ﷺ, who was branding some camels or sheep. When he looked at him, he said to Anas, "Has the daughter of Milhan given birth?" He said, "Yes."He put down what was in his hand and took the boy, then said, "Bring me some ajwa dates." The Prophet ﷺ took the dates and began to rub them on the boy's palate, and the boy began to lick his lips. He said, "Look at the Ansar's love of dates." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the tahnik for him and named him Abdullah.Thabit said, "He was counted among the best of the Muslims."Perhaps the additions found in this story are not from Sulayman bin Mughira, because the version that Muslim and Imam Ahmad (13026) related from him does not contain these additions. Tayalisi pointed to this when he said, "A shaykh narrated to us, who heard it from Nadr bin Anas," and the narrations of some of them have become mixed with those of others, "Malik, the father of Anas, said to his wife," and then he related the story. This unidentified shaykh causes no harm, because Abu Dawud traced it with a chain through someone else as well.
