The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you grows drowsy on Friday, let him move from his place to another."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: إذا نعس أحدكم يوم الجمعة فليتحول من مجلسه ذلك.
Abu Dawud (1119) and Tirmidhi (526) both narrated it through Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, as mentioned. The wording given is that of Tirmidhi, and Abu Dawud's version does not mention Friday. Its chain of transmission is hasan, on account of Ibn Ishaq, for he is truthful and his hadith is hasan when he explicitly states that he heard it directly, and he did state this explicitly with Imam Ahmad (6187), which removes the suspicion of concealment in his transmission. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." Ibn Khuzayma (1819), Ibn Hibban (2792), and Hakim (1/291) graded it sahih, narrating it through various routes from Ibn Ishaq, from Nafi, with the same content. Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the criteria of Muslim, though neither of them (Bukhari or Muslim) included it."Bayhaqi (3/237) narrated it through Abdul-Rahman bin Muhammad Muharibi, from Yahya bin Saeed Ansari, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, with similar wording, as a raised hadith (marfu). This is a good corroboration for Ibn Ishaq.Bayhaqi also narrated it through Rabi bin Sulayman, from Shafii, from Ibn Uyayna, from Amr bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar, who said, "It is said to a man, if he becomes drowsy on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon, that he should move from his place."The scholars differed regarding this hadith. The majority held it to be sahih as a raised hadith (marfu). Ibn Madini said, "I examined the book of Ibn Ishaq, and I found nothing objectionable in it except in two hadiths, and it is possible that both of them are sahih." This is how Bukhari transmitted from him (as found in Tahzib Kamal 6/224). Yaqub bin Sufyan Fasawi also transmitted from him, saying, "I found nothing from Ibn Ishaq except two objectionable (munkar) hadiths..." and he mentioned this hadith along with another one.Likewise, Bayhaqi held this hadith to be defective, saying, "The raising of this hadith to the level of marfu is not established, and what is well known from Ibn Umar is that it is his own statement (mawquf)." Ibn Turkmani responded to him, saying, "The raising to marfu status is an addition from a reliable narrator, and it has been narrated through two routes, so judgment must be given in its favor..." (summarized to this point). As mentioned earlier, Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban, and Hakim all graded it sahih, so at the very least it should be considered hasan, because Ibn Ishaq did explicitly state that he heard it directly. And Ibn Madini, despite being among those who consider this hadith defective, indicated that it could possibly be sahih, as was mentioned from him earlier. And Allah knows best.
