He was asked, "Did the Prophet ﷺ deliver the sermon standing or sitting?"He replied, "Have you not read 'and left you standing' [Jumuah 62:11]?"
أنه سئل: أكان النبي ﷺ يخطب قائما أو قاعدا؟ قال: أو ما تقرأ: {وتركوك قيما}؟
Ibn Majah (1108) narrated it from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Ibn Abu Ghaniya narrated to us, from Amash, from Ibrahim, from Alqama, from Abdullah, that he was asked about this and mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Busiri said, "This is a sahih chain of transmission, its narrators are trustworthy."As for Ibn Majah's statement, "This is unusual (gharib), no one narrated it except Ibn Abu Shayba alone," what he means by this, and Allah knows best, is that Ibn Abu Shayba was the sole narrator of this hadith from Ibn Abu Ghaniya. Ibn Abu Shayba is one of the well-known leading scholars, so his being the sole narrator does not weaken the hadith.Standing during the sermon is obligatory upon anyone who is able, because the Prophet ﷺ consistently maintained this practice, and this is the view of the majority of scholars. Some jurists among the people of Kufa held that standing during the sermon is a recommended practice, not obligatory. The first person to deliver the sermon while sitting, due to a valid excuse, was Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, when the fat of his belly and body had increased.
