I attended the prayer of Eid al-Fitr with the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. All of them would perform the prayer before the sermon, then deliver the sermon afterward. The narrator said, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ then descended. It is as though I can still see him now, gesturing with his hand for the men to sit. Then he proceeded, making his way through them until he came to the women, with Bilal accompanying him. He recited, "Prophet, when believing women come to you pledging allegiance to you that they will not associate anything with Allah" [Mumtahanah 60:12]. He recited this verse to its end, then asked, "Are you committed to that?"Only one woman among them answered, saying, "Yes, Prophet of Allah." It was not known at the time who she was.He said, "Then give in charity."Bilal spread out his garment and said, "Come forward! May my father and mother be ransomed for you!"The women began throwing their rings and ornaments into Bilal's garment. In another narration, he says, I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer before the sermon. He then delivered the sermon, but realized that the women had not heard him. So he went over to them, reminded them, admonished them, and instructed them to give in charity, while Bilal held out his garment. The women began tossing in rings, earrings, and other items.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on the two Eids (884) via the route of Abdul-Razzaq, and it is in Musannaf (5632), where he said, Ibn Jurayj informed us, saying, Hasan bin Muslim informed me, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, who said, then he mentioned it.The second narration he related via the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna, Ayub narrated to us, saying, I heard Ataa say, I heard Ibn Abbas say, then he mentioned it.Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on the two Eids (979), saying, Ibn Jurayj said, and Hasan bin Muslim informed me, with the same wording, and it is connected to the preceding chain for the hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah, and it is not a suspended narration. It had already come earlier in the chapter on the sermon after the Eid (962) with a full chain, from Abu Asim, who said, Ibn Jurayj informed us, saying, Hasan bin Muslim informed me, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, who mentioned the hadith in a shortened form.Ibn Abbas said, the Prophet ﷺ thought that the women had not heard, so he went to them and admonished them, and said, "Give charity," then he mentioned it. Abdul-Razzaq narrated it (5633) from Mamar, from Ayub, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, then he mentioned it.Al-fatakh, with fatha on the fa and the ta, and ending in kha, Abdul-Razzaq said, "Rings made of bone that women used to wear in the pre-Islamic era."A benefit, after the Prophet ﷺ finished the sermon, he came to the women to admonish them, since they were far from the men, and some of them sat outside the masjid due to menstruation or postpartum bleeding. The Prophet ﷺ came to them and admonished them. As for today, in most countries the voice of the imam reaches the women through a loudspeaker, so it is best for the imam to devote a portion of the sermon to admonishing the women without needing to go to them.
