Umar bin Khattab asked Abu Waqid al-Laythi, "What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite during the prayers of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr?"He replied, "He used to recite in them 'Qaf. By the glorious Quran' [Qaf 50:1] and 'The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split' [Qamar 54:1]."
أن عمر بن الخطاب سأل أبا واقد الليثي: ما كان يقرأ به رسول الله ﷺ في الأضحى والفطر؟ فقال: كان يقرأ فيهما بـ {ق والقرآن المجيد} و {اقتربت الساعة وانشق القمر}.
Malik reported it in "The Two Eids" (8) from Damra bin Saeed Mazani, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba bin Masud, that Umar bin Khattab asked Abu Waqid, and he mentioned it. Muslim also reported it in "The Two Eids" (891) through the route of Malik, in the same manner. However, Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba did not meet Umar bin Khattab.For this reason, Muslim followed it with another narration from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba, from Abu Waqid Laythi, who said, "Umar bin Khattab asked me what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite on the day of Eid. I said, "Surah Qamar and Surah Qaf."Nawawi said, "The second narration has a connected chain, for he undoubtedly met Abu Waqid and heard from him without dispute. So there is no fault to be found with Muslim in reporting it, for it is sahih and connected."
