Ammar bin Yasir led us in a prayer and made it brief. Some of the people remarked, "You shortened the prayer," or, "You made it brief."He replied, "Even so, I supplicated during it with words I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."When he rose to leave, one of the people followed him. It was Ubayy himself, but he referred to himself indirectly. He asked Ammar about the supplication, then came back and reported it to the people."O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, keep me alive as long as You know life is best for me, and take my soul when You know death is best for me. O Allah, I ask You for awe of You in private and in public. I ask You for the word of truth in times of contentment and of anger. I ask You for moderation in poverty and in wealth. I ask You for blessings that never end. I ask You for the delight of an eye that never ceases. I ask You for contentment after Your decree. I ask You for the coolness of life after death. I ask You for the pleasure of gazing upon Your Face and the longing to meet You, without harmful affliction or misleading trial. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are guided."
Nasai narrated it (1305) from Yahya bin Habib bin Arabi, who said, Hammad narrated to us, who said, Ata bin Saaib narrated to us, and he mentioned it.Darimi narrated it in Radd Ali Jahmiya (188), and Ibn Khuzayma in Kitab Tawhid (12), and from him Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (1971) and Hakim (1/524), all of them through the route of Hammad bin Zayd, with the same wording. Hakim said, "This is a hadith with a sahih chain of transmission."I say, it is as he said, for Ata bin Saaib is trustworthy, the leading scholars affirmed his trustworthiness, except that his memory became confused in his later years, but Hammad bin Salama narrated from him before that confusion set in.Nasai narrated it (1306), and Ahmad (4/264), and Tabarani in Duaa (625) by another route, and it includes Sharik bin Abdullah Nakhai the judge, whose memory is weak, but there is no harm in relying on him for corroborating narrations.Ibn Khuzayma said, "In the Prophet's ﷺ request of his Lord for the pleasure of looking upon His face lies the clearest of clarifications and the plainest of proofs, that Allah has a face which whoever Allah
has favored takes pleasure in looking upon, and He has granted the favor of looking upon His face."
