He narrated to them, saying, "I went on the expedition to Khaybar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The people were starving, so we caught some domestic donkeys and slaughtered them. The Prophet ﷺ was informed of this, and he ordered Abd al-Rahman bin Awf to announce to the people, 'The flesh of domestic donkeys is not lawful for anyone who bears witness that I am the Messenger of Allah.'"He continued, "We also found onions and garlic in their gardens. The people, being famished, ate from them heavily. When they came to the mosque, its air reeked of onion and garlic."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever has eaten from this foul plant, let him not come near us." He also said, "Plunder is not lawful, nor is any predator with fangs, nor is an animal tied up and used as a target."
Ahmad narrated it (17741), and Tabarani in Kabir (22/216), and this is their wording, and Nasai (4341), abridged and without the point of citation, all of them via Baqiya bin Walid, from Buhayr bin Saad, from Khalid bin Madan, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, from Abu Thalaba, who mentioned it. This chain contains Baqiya bin Walid, who conceals defects in transmission and narrated it using the ambiguous form, but he was corroborated.Tabarani narrated it in Kabir (22/215) through another route, from Aqeel bin Mudrik, from Luqman bin Amir, from Jubayr bin Nufayr Hadrami, and he mentioned something similar. Its chain is hasan because of Luqman bin Amir Wasabi Himsi, for he is hasan al-hadith. Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is recorded," and Ibn Hibban deemed him trustworthy. As for Aqeel bin Mudrik, who is Sulami Shami, no one deemed him trustworthy except Ibn Hibban, and so the Hafiz said, "Acceptable," and indeed he is so, because he was corroborated in the first chain. Haythami graded it hasan in Majma (18/2).The mujaththama is any animal that is propped up and shot at until it is killed, though this is most common among birds, rabbits, and similar creatures that crouch on the ground. Nihaya (2/239).
