A man led a group of people in prayer and spat toward the qiblah while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was watching. When he finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He shall not lead you in prayer again."Afterward, the man tried to lead them in prayer, but they prevented him and told him what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said. He mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who replied, "Yes." I think he also said, "You have offended Allah and His Messenger."
Abu Dawud reported it (481). He said, Ahmad bin Salih narrated to us, Abdullah bin Wahb narrated to us, Amr informed me, from Bakr bin Sawada Judhami, from Salih bin Khaywan, from Abu Sahla, and he related it.Its chain is hasan because of Salih bin Khaywan, with a fatha on the dotted letter, though it is also said with the undotted letter. Ajli deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators. Munziri passed over him in silence in Mukhtasar, as did the Hafiz in Fath, while Iraqi said in Sharh Taqrib (1/381), Its chain is good. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (1636), as did Ibn Qattan in Bayan Wahm wal-Ihham (5/336).
