The Prophet ﷺ sent a cavalry unit toward Najd, and they returned with a man from the tribe of Banu Hanifa named Thumama bin Uthal, the chief of the people of Yamama. They tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque.
بعث النبي ﷺ خيلا قبل نجد، فجاءت برجل من بني حنيفة يقال له: ثمامة بن أثال، سيد أهل اليمامة، فربطوه بسارية من سواري المسجد.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer (462), and Muslim in the Book of Jihad (1764), both from Layth bin Saad, who said, Saeed bin Abu Saeed told us that he heard Abu Hurairah say the same thing, in a long hadith that will come later in the Book of Jihad.
